Patent number: 7582472Abstract: There is provided a device for partitioning a liquefied sample into discrete volumes. The device includes a bottom member; a top member disposed adjacent the bottom member; and at least one channel member disposed between the top and bottom members. The at least one channel member is at least partially defined by the top and bottom members and has first and second end portions. The first end portion of the at least one channel has an opening to receive liquid and the second end portion of the at least one channel has a reaction compartment and a vent opening. Accordingly, when the liquefied sample is introduced to the first end portion, capillary action assists in causing the liquefied sample to travel from the first end portion to the second end portion and at least a portion of the liquefied sample is caused to remain in the reaction compartment.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 2004Date of Patent: September 1, 2009Inventors: Kenneth E. Patent number: 7384778Abstract: The present invention provides devices and methods for determining the presence or absence of pathogens in a biological sample and for the concurrent determination of the antimicrobial susceptibility of pathogens present. The devices and methods of the present invention are able to make the determinations without pre-selection of target bacteria. Instead, all organisms from the sample are applied to the device. In wells where one or more antimicrobial agents are present only pathogens resistant to the antimicrobial agent grow. This allows the user to determine the presence of target pathogens and concurrently determine the resistance patterns of the organisms without the need to subculture the organisms. The present invention also provides methods of performing a business service of performing the determinations described above, and kits containing the devices and descriptions of the methods.Type: GrantFiled: January 9, 2003Date of Patent: June 10, 2008Assignee: Idexx Laboratories, Inc.Inventors: Chun-Ming Chen, Charles Carpenter, Haoyi Gu, Ali Naqui, Gary Madsen, Thomas O'Connor, Jr., Katherine Jean Esty

Patent number: 6984499Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of detecting the presence of target microorganisms in a biological sample and of simultaneously determining the susceptibility of the microorganisms to antimicrobial agents. The target microbial organisms may be urinary pathogens. The methods include the steps of providing a multicompartment assay device with at least one compartment containing a medium capable of sustaining the growth of total viable microorganisms, at least one compartment containing a medium capable of sustaining the growth of target microorganisms, and at least one compartment containing an antimicrobial susceptibility interpretation medium. A biological sample is placed in each compartment and the presence and antimicrobial susceptibility of the target microorganisms which may be present is determined by analyzing which compartments exhibit microbial growth.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 1997Date of Patent: January 10, 2006Assignee: IDEXX Laboratories, Inc.Inventors: Chun-Ming Chen, Charles R. Patent number: 6060266Abstract: A self-contained incubator for growth of microorganism kit and methods for use of such a kit are provided. The kit and methods may detect the presence of microorganisms and may utilie a microorganism growth and indicator medium provided in a sample container along with a heat source, preferably generating heat through chemical means, and optionally heat shields, allowing for on-site testing of a microorganism present in a sample. The sample container may also include a removable vessel cap that includes a barrier separating the sample from a material capable of disinfecting the sample, thereby preventing contact of the sample and the material for a desired time period. The vessel cap may also be used independently in other applications.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 1998Date of Patent: May 9, 2000Assignee: Idexx Laboratories, Inc.Inventors: Ali Naqui, Erwin F. Patent number: 6022698Abstract: A composition for use in a medium for detecting yeasts and molds in a test sample, the composition comprises a substrate for an aminopeptidase; and a signal moiety linked to the substrate, the signal moiety capable of providing a detectable signal when cleaved by aminopeptidase in yeasts or molds. Optionally, an aminopeptidase inhibitor is added to the composition, to reduce endogenous enzymatic activity in samples. A method for use of the composition to detect the presence or amount of yeasts and/or molds in a test sample comprises inoculating a medium comprising the composition of claim 1 with said test sample; incubating the inoculated medium under conditions suitable for the growth of yeasts or molds; and, observing any detectable signal, whereby the presence of a detectable signal indicates the presence of yeasts or molds in the test sample.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1998Date of Patent: February 8, 2000Assignee: Idexx Laboratories, IncorporatedInventors: Chun-Ming Chen, Haoyi Gu
