Abstract: The disclosure relates to shelving structures and other structures which, for reasons of stability, require reliable stiffening diagonally in one or more planes, by means of two mutually intersecting wire-like or rod-like stays (3, 4), the ends (5) of which are attached to the structure at four attachment locations (7). The erectness of the structure, for example on an uneven foundation, and the extent to which it can sway are both dependent upon the stays being brought to the correct length and tension between respective attachment locations. This has previously either been neglected or achieved with the aid of robust, expensive and complicated tensioning mechanisms, primarily tensionscrews, used to shorten the stays.

Abstract: A shelving assembly comprises two side pieces, a back plate positioned between the side pieces, a plurality of adjustable shelves, and a plurality of edge strip members. The latter connect rear edge portions of the side pieces to vertical side edges of the back plate. Each edge strip member is securely attached to the back plate and is positioned along the side edges of the back plate. Each edge strip member includes a forwardly directed channel which slidingly engages around at least a part of an associated vertical rear edge of a side piece in a manner binding the side piece to the side edge of the back plate independently of separable fasteners.

The leading edge of each shelf has a horizontal channel member mounted thereon. Securing hooks connect the ends of the horizontal channel members to the vertical channel members. Elements are provided to keep the back plate pressed against the rear edges of the shelves. The arrangement reinforces the back plate so that a back plate can be employed which otherwise is not sufficiently rigid to support the shelves.
