Patent number: 9614243Abstract: A multilayered structure suitable as an electrode in a power source and a method of producing the same. The structure comprises a conductive laminar layer; and an enzyme layer containing an essentially dry enzyme capable of oxidizing or dehydrogenating carbohydrate material under suitable conditions. Because the enzymatic anode layer and the fuel containing layer are not interacting during the production and since they are kept latent during storage time, the power source will remain stable for extended periods of time, thus increasing the utility of the power source.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 2010Date of Patent: April 4, 2017Assignee: Teknologian Tutkimuskeskus VTT OyInventors: Anu Vaari, Ville-Mikko Ojala, Matti Valkiainen, Maria Smolander, Harry Boer

Patent number: 8895273Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and microbial host strain for converting a hexuronic acid to a hexaric acid. In particular, the invention relates to the conversion of D-galacturonic acid to meso-galactaric acid (mucic acid). The invention also concerns an isolated nucleotide sequence. According to the present method a microbial host strain genetically modified to express uronate dehydrogenase enzyme (EC 1.1.1.203) is contacted with a biomaterial comprising hexuronic acid and the conversion products are recovered. By using the recombinant microorganisms of the present invention it is possible to treat biomaterials comprising hexuronic acids and thereby decrease the amount of hexuronic acids released to the environment.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 2009Date of Patent: November 25, 2014Assignee: Teknologian Tutkimuskeskus VTTInventors: Harry Boer, Satu Hildich, Peter Richard, Merja Penttila

Patent number: 8758936Abstract: A thin film structure, method of producing it and the use thereof. The thin film structure comprises a substrate with a thin conductive layer containing an oxidizing enzyme mixed with an electron transfer mediator. The thin layer is protected against wetting to allow for its storage in dry conditions and further being sufficiently porous to allow for immediate activation of the oxidizing enzyme when contacted with an aqueous solution. The thin film can be used as a cathode in electrochemical fuel cells.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 2007Date of Patent: June 24, 2014Assignee: Valtion Teknillinen TutkimuskeskusInventors: Matti Valkiainen, Harry Boer, Anu Koivula, Maria Smolander, Pia Qvintus-Leino, Kirsi Immonen, Liisa Viikari

Patent number: 8751243Abstract: A method and apparatus are presented for providing language translation assistance to a user of a mobile terminal. The terminal makes available a number of language translation services to the user, and the mobile terminal has a database for storing translation data. If the translation data is insufficient to cover a present or anticipated context of the mobile terminal, then the terminal sends a context change signal, and subsequently receives a data update signal that includes updates to the database. The terminal is then able to provide a changed language translation service to the user, utilizing the updates to the database.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 2010Date of Patent: June 10, 2014Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventors: Andreas Heiner, Harry Boer

Publication number: 20120276596Abstract: The present invention relates to the fields of biomass technology, and more precisely to applications of packaging, and coating products for food and cosmetics. The present invention relates to a method of modifying a polymeric polysaccharide matrix and to a method of coating a product to impart new properties to the product. The present invention further relates to a modified polymeric polysaccharide matrix, to a product being coated with a modified polymeric polysaccharide matrix and uses thereof.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 15, 2010Publication date: November 1, 2012Applicant: TEKNOLOGIAN TUTKIMUSKESKUS VTTInventors: Jaakko Pere, Maria Smolander, Harry Boer

Publication number: 20120080450Abstract: A food dispenser comprise a flexible container with a spout member at the bottom end thereof. The bottom end of the container is supported by means of a cap stand which surrounds the spout member. The cap stand has a cap for closing or opening the dispenser in view of discharging a fluid food product. Because the cap stand has a collar which is at least partly transparent, the spout member as well as the discharge of the food product from the spout member can be readily observed by the consumer. Thereby, the consumer may control the dosing of the food product from the dispenser in a better way.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 1, 2010Publication date: April 5, 2012Applicant: CONOPCO, INC., D/B/A UNILEVERInventors: Mark Dieter DZIERSK, James A. Publication number: 20120045804Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and microbial host strain for converting a hexuronic acid to a hexaric acid. In particular, the invention relates to the con-version of D-galacturonic acid to meso-galactaric acid (mucic acid). The invention also concerns an isolated nucleotide sequence. According to the present method a microbial host strain genetically modified to express uronate dehydrogenase enzyme (EC 1.1.1.203) is contacted with a biomaterial comprising hexuronic acid and the con-version products are recovered. By using the recombinant microorganisms of the present invention it is possible to treat biomaterials comprising hexuronic acids and thereby decrease the amount of hexuronic acids released to the environment.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 22, 2009Publication date: February 23, 2012Applicant: TEKNOLOGIAN TUTKIMUSKESKUS VTTInventors: Harry Boer, Satu Hildich, Peter Richard, Merja Penttila
