  • Patent number: 5035036
Abstract: The arrangement includes one or more steel strip casting plants which are followed by a temperature equalizing furnace, a transverse conveying unit for steel strip sections and a finishing mill. The finishing mill is arranged laterally offset and in the opposite direction of the discharge direction of the steel strip casting plant. Another temperature equalizing furnace is arranged which conveys in the opposite direction of the first temperature equalizing furnace and toward the finishing mill. The temperature equalizing furnaces arranged next to each other are connected to each other by a transverse conveying unit arranged at the front end of the temperature equalizing furnaces.

  • Patent number: 4967582
Abstract: The bending and balancing mechanism for axially shiftable rolls of a roll stand, especially the working rolls of a four-high roll stand, comprises a guiding block rigidly mounted in a stand window of each roll stand and roll supporting members supported horizontally slidable adjacent both ends of the rolls on an upper and/or lower lifting housing guided vertically on the guiding block. The roll bending forces are transmittable from bending cylinders to the roll supporting members and at least one bending cylinder, advantageously hydraulic cylinder, engages on the upper and lower lifting housing, this bending cylinder being supported on a stationary guiding block. Because of this latter structure the bending and balancing forces are better transmitted to the working or other rolls.

  • Patent number: 4848128
Abstract: A roll stand has a stationary frame having a drive side and a service side, upper and lower working rolls having axially opposite ends at the sides, respective pairs of upper and lower journal blocks coupled with the ends of the rolls at the sides and a drive connected to the working-roll ends at the drive side for oppositely rotating the working rolls. Respective upper and lower pusher bodies are provided adjacent the journal blocks in the frame and respective upper and lower guides in the frame support the bodies for displacement of same only axially in the frame. Respective pairs of formations at least one of which is vertically elongated couple each of the bodies to the respective block for joint axial displacement while permitting relative vertical nonaxial displacement between the bodies and the respective blocks.

  • Patent number: 4751837
Abstract: A method and apparatus for height or level-positioning of rolls in rolling mill frames, for adapting the upper edge of the lower working roll to the rolling plane, and for changing the rolls, expecially in four-high mills equipped with a roll changing cart which can travel in the longitudinal direction of the rolls, and equipped with interchangeable shim plates of various individual thicknesses for supporting the holding elements of the support rolls. The apparatus affords an infinitely variable and continous adaptation to the wear of the rolls. The apparatus is operated such that the level or position of the individual shim plates is carried out infinitely variable by way of a short vertical stroke. The mill preferably includes a system of movable wedges which includes two upper wedges and two lower wedges.

  • Patent number: 4548064
Abstract: A rolling stand including a pair of working rolls and associated backing rolls, the working rolls defining a nip through which a strip can be advanced in a succession of passes forming a single run, so that with each pass the thickness and widths of the strip are reduced. The working rolls have end regions projecting laterally beyond the longitudinal edges of the strip, and machining devices are provided on the frame of the stand to reduce the diameters of the projecting end regions of the working rolls after each pass during a single run so that the working rolls ony contact the respective backing rolls along a distance equal generally to the strip width.

  • Patent number: 4513491
Abstract: In a method of rolling wide strip starting material, an ingot slab is rolled to the desired wide strip width by having its shorter sides edge-rolled. In order to save time, energy, material and investment capital, the ingot slab has a cross-section tapered towards the shorter sides in a wedge-shaped or curved manner at both edges, and is edge-rolled approximately to the wide strip width desired while filling out the rectangular shape.

  • Patent number: 4479374
Abstract: A rolling stand includes a frame and a pair of working rolls mounted on the frame centered on and rotatable about respective parallel axes and defining a nip so that a strip can pass in each of a succession of passes forming a single run through the nip so that with each pass the thickness and width of the strip are reduced. The ends of the working rolls project laterally beyond the longitudinal edges of the strip. Respective backing rolls mounted on the frame extending generally the full length of the working rolls are braced toward the nip against the working rolls to urge same against the strip. Tools displaceably mounted on the frame reduce the diameters of the projecting ends of the working rolls several times after respective passes during a single run so that the working rolls only contact the respective backing rolls along a diatance equal generally to the workpiece width.

  • Patent number: 4375998
Abstract: Coils of metal strip are cooled by being placed on porous supports with the coil axes vertical. Water is introduced into the coil interiors and most of the water overflows the coil tops and thereby cools the coil tops and peripheries. A small proportion of the water flows out through the porous supports and thereby cools the bottom ends of the coils. The water is preferably introduced from below. Apparatus for performing cooling is disclosed.
