  • Patent number: 4278307
Abstract: A cage for a rolling bearing has spreadable holding projections defining pockets for receiving rolling elements. In order to inhibit separation of the rolling elements from the cage after insertion of the rolling elements between the holding projections, the cage has deformable or spreadable cage portions positioned to be spreadable or deformed after insertion of the rolling elements in the cage, for supporting the adjacent holding projections against movement away from the adjacent rolling elements.

  • Patent number: 4255000
Abstract: A rotary drill bit assembly comprising a trunnion and at least one rotary cutter mounted on the trunnion. The trunnion is supported by bearings including at least one radial bearing and at least one axial roller bearing. The axial bearing is comprised of conical rollers and one of the races for this bearing is disposed perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the rotary cutter and the complementary bearing race is conical. A guide rim is associated with one of the bearing races which guides the conical rollers in a radially outward direction.

  • Patent number: 4235480
Abstract: A sliding seal ring for a drill bit comprising at least one cutter rotatably mounted on a journal forming part of the drill bit body. The seal ring is made of elastic metallic strip material and is of spiral configuration with the spirals in overlapping relation. The seal ring is mounted under axial tension between the pocket in an edge ring and the drill bit body and rotates with the cutter. In one form of the invention, the spirals are in abutting relation to provide a complete seal. In another form the spirals are open to define gaps permitting flow of flushing liquid to cool and lubricate the bearings supporting the cutter on the trunnion.

  • Patent number: 4233855
Abstract: Mechanism for axially shifting an anti-friction bearing mounted in a bore of a housing extension or the like. The mechanism comprises an annular member such as the outer ring of the bearing mounted in the bore which has at least one radially outwardly directed protrusion engaging through an axial slit in the housing extension. The extension has external screw threads adjacent the axial slits to receive locking nuts on either side of the protrusion to fix the annular member in a selected position relative to the extension.

  • Patent number: 4206952
Abstract: A rotary drill bit having a plurality of cutters, each rotatably mounted on a trunnion. The bearing support includes a friction bearing consisting of a cup member of half-moon shape preferably made of an oil soaked sintered material. The outer surface of the cup engages the bore of the cutter and forms the non-loaded part of the slip surface in the unloaded zone of the friction bearing. The cup is mounted in a manner retaining the cutter against axial displacement from the trunnion. Biasing means between the cup and trunnion presses the cup against the cutter bore and compensates for wear of the cup.

  • Patent number: 4138171
Abstract: A clutch thrust bearing has thin-walled bearing members formed to define a race therebetween for receiving rolling bearing elements. One of the bearing members has a generally radially extending central wall portion, and an axially extending annular wall portion, the center portion defining one wall of the race and the axially extending portion extending away from the other bearing member. The one bearing member further includes a second thin-walled portion on the side of the bearing away from the other member, and axially spaced from the center wall portion of the same member. This thin-walled portion has a central depression for receiving thrust loads on the bearing, and the outer walls of this portion extend axially and are telescoped with the first mentioned axially extending wall. An elastic member is provided between the two center portions of the one member, and may be in the form of a split ring or an elastic material.
