  • Patent number: 4379614
Abstract: A connecting device for a pair of light waveguide cables with each cable having an optical fiber which is loosely enclosed in a tubular sheath characterized by a joint between the ends of the pair of sheaths of the two cables being bridged by an appropriate tube which is fixed to the ends of the two sheaths and does not require any special housing such as bushing and the like. The tube may be an inner tube, which is inserted into the interiors of the pair of tubular sheaths being connected together or an outer tube which is fixed onto the tubular sheaths. In another embodiment, both an inner and outer tube are utilized. A length adjustment of the optical fiber within the pair of tubular sheaths can be carried out by virtue of a helical arrangement of the optical fiber and the bridging which is provided by the one or more tubes.

  • Patent number: 4257707
Abstract: In order to be able to measure the attenuation of a lightwave guide fiber definitely and reproducibly, it is suggested to offer a mode distribution to the lightwave guide to be measured which corresponds with the "steady state" of a very long fiber. A mode mixer and a mode stripper is for this purpose connected in series with the lightwave guide to be measured. All core modes and leakage- and jacket modes are excited in the mode mixer. In the mode stripper the jacket- and leakage modes are again stripped (absorbed) so that a mode distribution, comparable to the "steady state", remains.

  • Patent number: 4248499
Abstract: A device for connecting individual light waveguides or conductors together using a splicing element which has a center portion for receiving and guiding the waveguides and end portions for engaging and gripping the sheath of the waveguides characterized by a pair of holders for holding light waveguides extending at an acute angle to a base of a splicing element which is held in a splicing element holder. The splicing element is movable relative to the ends of the fibers so that the ends of the individual light waveguides are moved towards one another in a centering groove of the center portion of the splicing element and are brought into mutual contact. Each of the holding devices for the light waveguides are mounted to move around a pivot, which lies beneath the plane of the waveguides when moved to a horizontal position and that each of the holders has a clamp for the portion of the light waveguide which is free of the sheath and for the sheath of the light waveguide.
