  • Patent number: 5014924
Abstract: In a winder for continuously winding a web material into rolls on successive cores, roll changing apparatus for cutting and transferring the web material from a full roll to an empty core includes two sets of water jet nozzles mounted for reciprocating movement in opposite directions lengthwise of the core to which the web is to be transferred. During the momentary interval of roll changing, the oppositely moving jets cut the web along a generally saw tooth pattern, and at the same time, the water which cuts the web also wets its cut leading end and the adjacent surface of the core, thereby causing adhesion of the end of the web to the core for a sufficient interval for this end of the web to be covered by the next wrap on the core.

  • Patent number: 4476019
Abstract: A pellet dryer is disclosed for removing plastic pellets from entraining water and drying the same. The rotating structure of the pellet dryer is essentially contained and supported on a door of a cabinet, so that the opening of the cabinet door exposes the pellet dryer structure and the interior of the cabinet for cleaning.

  • Patent number: 4422588
Abstract: A system and method for slitting and rewinding includes a slitter and a drum type rewinder. A core cutter includes a magazine for retaining a plurality of cores and a programmable transversely movable core slitter which may be moved to discrete transverse locations for severing a selected core into widths corresponding to the setting of the slitter knives. A core transporter receives the sections of slit core and transports the same to the winder drums while, at the same time, moves the completed roll out of winding position. A web severing and adhesive applying apparatus cuts the web from the winder and applies strips of adhesive to the tail and lead edges of the back. The core sections as formed by the core slitting or sectioning apparatus, are maintained in predetermined alignment according to the position of the knives and are inserted into the winder by the transporter behind the previously formed roll as the roll is moved out of the winder, resulting in a minimum of lost time or wasted material.

  • Patent number: 4092886
Abstract: A web slitting apparatus comprises a pair of upper and lower disk shaped web slitting members having their peripheral edges in engagement and disposed for rotation about essentially parallel axes on opposite sides of the web to be slit. The lower web slitting member is driven by a motor having a printed circuit armature. The lower web slitting member and the armature are secured to the motor drive shaft so that when the motor is activated, it directly drives the lower slitting member. The motor is activated only during the initial threading of the winding apparatus to assist in slitting of the web, and during initial acceleration of the web up to the normal line speed, whereupon the motor is deactivated. The web cutting apparatus will thereafter be driven by frictional engagement with the web and continue to slit the web as a web driven slitter.

  • Patent number: 3950988
Abstract: In order to measure tension in a moving web independently of the frictional forces developed between the web and stationary parts of the measuring mechanism, a drag board assembly is provided with a pivotal mounting on an axis which is so located with respect to the loop into which the web is deflected in passing from the adjacent guide roll on the upstream side to the adjacent guide roll downstream thereof that the forces generated by web tension acting on the drag board assembly create a turning moment about its pivot axis which is continuously measured by a load cell or other load sensing means, but whatever moments of force are generated by friction between the web and the drag board assembly are effectively neutralized by directing them through the pivot axis.
