    Abstract: A hydrophilic antimicrobial coating includes a porous ceramic-based coating and at least one biocide dispersed in the porous, hydrophilic ceramic-based coating. The coating can be an alumina coating, and the biocide can include silver oxide. A second biocide such as zinc oxide or copper oxide can also be dispersed in the porous, hydrophilic ceramic-based coating. The hydrophilic antimicrobial coating can be applied to a heat transfer surface of a heat exchanger.
