  • Patent number: 8413479
Abstract: A forging die tool set defines a cavity and includes a core rod in the cavity for shaping a void in a work piece. The core rod extends in a direction in which the work piece is introduced, compressed, and ejected from the cavity. The core rod includes an upper portion and a lower portion. The upper portion has a cross sectional shape that forms a certain shape in the work piece and a radially tapered section that tapers toward the lower portion of the core rod. The lower portion also has a cross sectional shape that forms a certain shape in the work piece, and the cross sectional shape of the upper portion differs from the cross sectional shape of the lower portion, the lower portion being a more wear resistant shape characterized by larger radii and the upper portion being a finishing shape with smaller radii for shaping the final form of the forged work piece.

  • Patent number: 8071016
Abstract: A method is disclosed of forming a powder metal compact. Powder metal is placed in an annular space of a compaction die tool set in which the annular space has inner and outer cylindrical surfaces that form inner and outer cylindrical surfaces of the powder metal compact. An elastomeric tool has a first cylindrical surface adjacent to a fixed cylindrical surface of the compaction die tool set that is radially fixed and further has a second cylindrical surface, opposite to the first cylindrical surface, that touches the powder metal. The powder metal is compressed to form the powder metal compact by applying an external axial force on the elastomeric tool while maintaining the diameter of the fixed cylindrical surface so as to cause the elastomeric tool to compress the second cylindrical surface of the elastomeric tool against the powder metal.

  • Publication number: 20100319650
Abstract: The invention provides a method of manufacturing a ferrous monolithic component and the component that results from the method. The method of the invention utilizes selective rapid cooling of the portion of the component that is desired to have increased strength and selective controlled cooling of the portion or portions which are desired to be more machinable. The controlled cooling may include cooling, re-heating and re-cooling. The result is a component with local high strength in the rapidly cooled zones and locally altered metallurgical properties to improve machinability in the more slowly cooled zones.

  • Publication number: 20100086429
Abstract: A powder metal component which has a powder metal composition formed into a cylinder, wherein the cylinder includes a wall thickness and a length, and a ratio of the length to the thickness is relatively high such that conventional compaction methods are difficult to use. The powder metal composition includes approximately between 85% and 99% sponge iron powder, approximately between 0.1% and 2.0% graphite, and approximately between 0.1% and 2.0% ethylene bis-stearamide wax. The powder metal component can be manufactured using an apparatus which includes a hard material core rod, and a shaped elastic die configured to circumscribe the core rod, or conversely, an apparatus with a shaped elastic core rod and a hard die.

  • Patent number: 5106059
Abstract: A quench tank includes a reservoir located within a sump tank. Heated steel parts are dropped through a vertical tube in which a quenching liquid is flowing upwardly from the sump tank and into the reservoir under hydrostatic-induced pressure. Turbulent flow of liquid across the surfaces of the steel parts produces a rapid cooling and quenching action. The liquid upflow is produced by a hydrostatic liquid head communicating with the lower end of the tube. The flow rate of the liquid, measured across the transverse cross section of the tube, is relatively constant, such that the quenching action is relatively uniform across a given part and from one part to another part.

  • Patent number: 4443017
Abstract: An annular seal for providing a seal between a piston member and a cylinder. The seal comprises a resiliently deformable annular member made of elastomeric material having a sealing lip and an axially extending mounting face. The seal includes an annular retaining ring comprising more than one loop of wire which is disposed within and bonded together by the elastomeric material. The piston member includes a mounting surface having an L-shaped cross section which is adapted to receive the sealing member thereon. The retaining ring is designed to resiliently deform the elastomeric material of the sealing member which is located between the retaining ring and the axially directed portion of the mounting surface to provide the sole means for retaining the seal on the piston member.
