  • Patent number: 9072036
Abstract: A method for selecting an air interface on a multi-mode wireless device capable of communicating over a plurality of air interfaces. The method comprising starting a first application and selecting a first application specific access list of a set of application specific access lists, the first application specific access list corresponding to the first application. The method also comprising selecting a first active network from the first application access specific list, the first network representing an available and most desirable network for the first application in the first application specific access list. The method further activating the first active network for use by the first application and switching from the first active network to a second active network if a user switches from the first application to a second application, wherein the first active network and the second active network are ascertained based on the set of application specific access lists.

  • Patent number: 8126423
Abstract: A wireless communications device and network having the ability to detect when a call session with a public service access point (PSAP) has not transferred location information for the wireless device to the PSAP. In on embodiment, the detection means includes a location request timer (LRT), which is started when the emergency call is initiated. If the LRT expires before a request for location information is received by the wireless communications device, the wireless device concludes that the PSAP does not have the location information. In another embodiment the wireless network determines the PSAP does not have location information without a timer. The location information is then presented to a caller on the wireless device, which allows the caller of the wireless device to relay the information to a human PSAP operator. The location information may also be provided to a human PSAP operator in a automated manner.

  • Patent number: 8073500
Abstract: A multimode wireless communication device and method for having the device detect a communication access technology is described. The multimode wireless device comprises a multimode transceiver module, a CAT detection module, and at least one CAT threshold level corresponding to each CAT. The multimode transceiver module is operatively coupled to a first antenna. The multimode transceiver module comprises at least two communication access technology (CAT) receiver modules operatively coupled to at least one antenna, wherein each CAT receiver module complies with a receiver requirement. The CAT detection module is operatively coupled to one of the CAT transceiver antenna and the CAT detection module is configured to detect a plurality of CAT RF energy levels associated with each CAT receiver module without activating the corresponding CAT transceiver module.

  • Publication number: 20080111748
Abstract: An antenna system includes a plurality of antenna feed points operatively coupled to one or more antennas and a controller for selecting at least one of the antenna feed points based on the operating environment of the antenna system. When the antenna system is employed in a mobile wireless device, selecting a particular antenna feed point can modify the device's surface current distribution to improve the antenna system's performance over the effects of near field conditions.

  • Publication number: 20070297358
Abstract: A wireless communications device having a localized preferred roaming list (WLANL), the WLANL having location specific WLAN AP information associated with it. A mobile wireless device uses the information in the WLANL to manage active searches for WLAN APs. In addition, the WLANL information can be used to mange active sessions, enabling a switch from one air interface to another depending on which air interface is currently the most reliable, has bandwidth available, or other considerations.
