Patent number: 7384673Abstract: A convoluted boot for constant velocity joints and a constant velocity joint lubricant for use in such a convoluted boot. An additive which is added to the constant velocity joint lubricant and/or to the convoluted boot material is provided. The additive comprises amide waxes and also may include hydrocarbon oils. Use is made, in particular, of monoamides and/or diamides of carboxylic acids with 8 to 50 carbon atoms to form, by diffusion, a lubricating film on the surface of a convoluted boot. Furthermore, oleic acid amide and/or ethylenediamine distearate result in a particularly early formation of a lubricating film on the outer boot surface and thus to a long-term prevention of noise.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 2002Date of Patent: June 10, 2008Assignee: GKN Automotive GmbHInventors: Herbert Konegen, Hans Schreiber, Lothar Gasper

Patent number: 6743482Abstract: The invention relates to an impregnating agent for a convoluted boot consisting of a thermplastic or elastomer material and used for covering the chamber of a joint, especially a rotating joint subjected to large articulation angles, which joint chamber is filled with a lubricant, said convoluted boot comprising a plurality of folds and two end collars, with the surfaces of the convoluted boot wall contacting one another when the joint is subjected to large articulation angles. It is the object of the invention to reduce the wear and eliminate squeaking symptoms of convoluted boots treated with the inventive impregnating agent. In accordance with the invention, the objective is achieved in that the impregnating agent contains a carrier fluid, an oil dissolved in the carrier fluid and having a molecular weight of >200, and a wetting agent which is soluble in oil and which reduces the surface tension of the oil.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 2003Date of Patent: June 1, 2004Assignee: GKN Automotive AGInventors: Thomas Schmidt, Joachim Wette, Thomas Schafferus, Herbert Konegen, Hans Schreiber

Patent number: 5836824Abstract: A convoluted boot made of thermoplastic elastomer for sealing an annular gap between two parts which are connected to one another so as to be rotationally fixed and articulatable relative to one another. The invention is especially useful in a constant velocity universal joint. The boot has two collar regions for being secured by a clamping element on the parts. A number of fold units extending between the collars. A base body is made of a thermoplastic material, and at least at one of the collar regions, is provided on its inside and outside with a coating. The coating material comprises a greater elasticity than the material of the base body.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 1997Date of Patent: November 17, 1998Assignee: GKN Automotive AGInventors: Herbert Konegen, Jurgen Kuhlit, Peter Junemann

Patent number: 5725432Abstract: A constant velocity universal ball joint (1) has an outer part (2), an inner part (6) received therein, and a cage (11) arranged between the outer part (2) and inner part (3) to guide balls (17) which serves to transmit torque between the outer part (2) and inner part (6). The balls (17) are guided between parallel window faces (15, 16) of the cage (11). To improve the service life values and the running-in conditions of the joint, balls (17) are used whose surface is ground and have a defined roughness. Thus, in the case of tolerance errors, the window faces (15, 16) are worked off to such an extent as to achieve identical load bearing conditions at the balls.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1996Date of Patent: March 10, 1998Assignee: GKN Automotive AGInventors: Herbert Konegen, Peter Seigert, Hans Schreiber, Frank Tenhumberg

Patent number: 5609527Abstract: A cage for a constant velocity universal joint has an increase in the fracture strength of the cage and thus the torque capacity of the entire constant velocity universal joint. This is achieved in that the apertures for the windows in the cage at the circumferentially extending contact faces do not extend parallel to the central axis but contact a virtual sphere arranged at the point of intersection between the radial center plane of the cage and the joint axis. As a result, the webs of the cage comprise a larger cross-section and in consequence, its fracture strength is improved.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 1994Date of Patent: March 11, 1997Assignee: GKN Automotive AGInventors: Charles Fuerstenau, Herbert Konegen, Wolfgang Hildebrandt, Peter Seigert
