  • Patent number: 7547557
Abstract: A diagnostic assay device that directs an applied sample to the analytical membrane of a directed flow device. The device has a sample receiving port defined by layers of built-up material on one end of the test strip. The port contains the sample and specifically directs it to the membrane in a controlled fashion. Additional features include configuration of the housing in a general C-shape with the test strip spanning the opening of the C-shape to allow access by a reader device. A preferred method employs superparamagnetic particles to label the target analytes for detection and measurement by means of an electromagnetic reader device.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: June 16, 2009
    Assignee: Quantum Design, Inc.

  • Publication number: 20040131500
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for measuring platelet activation in a whole blood matrix under physiological conditions and independent of the activation of a coagulation cascade in the plasma. The method and system measure the propensity of cells in a biological fluid to form adherent cell aggregates and thrombin. The method accommodates both citrated and native venous blood. The system includes a simple, low-cost, single-use thrombogenic test cartridge for measuring the intensity of thrombus formation, and for providing quantitative measurement of platelet functions in a near-patient environment. Hemostatic activity of platelets in a biological fluid sample is assessed by monitoring the degree of adherent thrombus formation after cells are exposed to platelet agonists in a shear stress environment. The system may be configured to monitor the therapeutic effects of anti-platelet agents, to assess primary hemostatic response of platelets, and to assess thrombotic potential of platelets.

  • Patent number: 5637472
Abstract: A method is provided for the preparation of semisolid particles or cells that have been chemically derivatized resulting in hydrazide functionalities covalently incorporated onto cell surface membrane molecules of the semisolid particles or cells, as well as a method for determining the levels of hydrazide groups on the particles or cells. The method involves the preparation and analysis of red blood cells chemically derivatized in such a manner that hydrazide functionalities have been covalently incorporated onto the cell membrane molecules, the preparation of hydrazine derivatized cells and the use thereof of the novel cells in agglutination reactions to promote the attachment of antigens and antibodies to the hydrazine derivatized cells without loss of antibody activity or the blocking of the etitope of interest.

  • Patent number: 5275951
Abstract: An apparatus is provided which includes a reaction cartridge having a plurality of reaction wells having different reagents disposed thereon, at least one well adapted to receive a sample, a well containing particles adapted to bind to the sample and which have the capability of being separated from cells which are not bound to the separation particles and at least one fluorophore adapted to bind to a specific type of cell in the sample, and a wash area adapted for washing a probe. An image forming device is provided to detect images which indicate whether specific reactions have occurred in each of the reaction wells. The apparatus also includes a mechanism for dispensing and aspirating liquids including a mechanism for detecting liquid levels. The device further includes logic for analyzing the information received from the image detection apparatus and processing the information to generate a visual indication of the results of the assays being performed.
