Patent number: 7159954Abstract: A system for controlling at least one of the slip threshold and the time period for an extended wheel slippage for a vehicle that is operating in the off-road ABS mode. When driving in a curve pattern and/or at high speeds, the individual wheel speeds are controlled with a lower slip threshold and/or shorter time period for the extended wheel slippage than when driving straight ahead and/or at a lower vehicle speed.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 2003Date of Patent: January 9, 2007Assignee: Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems, LLCInventors: Hermann J. Patent number: 7137674Abstract: A method of generating a reverse driving signal for a vehicle includes the step of activating an actuator, such as a vehicle stop light switch, a predetermined number of times within a predetermined period of time. A braking system for a vehicle includes an actuator, such as a stop light switch that is actuatable to provide a reverse driving signal indicative of brake pedal operation, an ECU that is electrically connected with the actuator for receiving the reverse driving signal, and a vehicle accessory, such as a back-up alarm, that is electrically connected with the ECU, the ECU being controlled as a function of the reverse driving signal.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 2004Date of Patent: November 21, 2006Assignee: Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLCInventor: Hermann J. Patent number: 7020551Abstract: A roll stability control system for a pneumatically operated vehicle brake system is implemented using simpler ABS hardware rather than more complex EBS hardware. For each brake chamber or channel, two 3/2 solenoid controlled valves are used. An ECU is operative to control the solenoids. The ECU is preferably operative to provide a selected delivery pressure to the brake chamber without measurement of delivery pressure to the brake chamber. Supply air is provided at a known pressure to a first solenoid controlled valve that is associated with the brake chamber; the amount of time of energization and de-energization of the first valve that is needed to provide an output therefrom of a given pressure, is calculated; and the first valve is energized and de-energized for the calculated times, thereby to cause a low-pressure test pulse to be provided to the brake chamber.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 2003Date of Patent: March 28, 2006Assignee: Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLCInventors: Hermann J. Goebels, Richard E. Beyer, Christopher M. Knaack, William P. Amato

Patent number: 6371573Abstract: A braking system for a wheeled vehicle includes a pressurized air source (63), an air actuated wheel braking device (51, 59), an operator control (49, 61) for commanding the supply of air to the braking device, an electronic control (19) which responds to vehicle speed and wheel speed to selectively invoking an antilock mode of braking. A control valve (37, 55) responds to the electronic control (19) and the operator control (49, 61) to selectively control the supply of air from the source to the braking device. In the antilock mode, the control valve is initially enabled to release braking pressure and thereafter alternately enabled and disabled to maintain braking pressure at a substantially constant reduced pressure, and subsequently alternately enabled and disabled at a reduced ratio of enabled duration to disabled duration to rebuild braking pressure.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 2000Date of Patent: April 16, 2002Assignee: Robert Bosch CorporationInventors: Hermann J. Patent number: 4230377Abstract: A pressure control valve unit for an anti-locking apparatus in motor vehicle wheel brakes which is actuatable by a control pressure which controls the brake pressure in at least one wheel brake cylinder, the pressure control valve unit having a pressure exchange chamber, which alternatively has brake cylinder pressure and atmospheric pressure, defined by a switching diaphragm and the switching diaphragm comprising the switching member of a relay valve on one side and on the side--like the closing body of a rapid-release valve--is provided the monitor member of a brake cylinder line leading to the outside air so that the pressure control valve unit combines the advantages of relay and switching valves without their disadvantages and the valve unit can be utilized in other fields, which can be accomplished by simple additional switching arrangements and which extend beyond the normal anti-locking protection function.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 1979Date of Patent: October 28, 1980Assignee: Robert Bosch GmbHInventor: Hermann J. Patent number: 3944290Abstract: An improved wheel lock prevention device for use in the brake system of motor vehicles. The device has a relay valve included in assembly with a motor vehicle operator controlled brake velve, a wheel brake cylinder and a source of pressurized air. The relay valve has a primary and secondary pressure side. The primary pressure side is connected to the brake valve and the secondary side is connected to the wheel brake cylinder.
