Abstract: A method is presented for optimizing communication for a user identified by a user identifier accessing a service in a telecommunication network. The method including the steps of: analyzing at the edge site all traffic packets originating from the user which connects to the network; checking whether the traffic packet requests a service; checking whether the service is available at the server of the edge site; rerouting the traffic packet to the edge site on the basis of a forwarding policy which is based either on the user identifier or on information contained in the IP packet portion; and forwarding the traffic packet to the core network if the traffic packet does not satisfy the policy or the service is not available at the edge site. The step of rerouting the traffic packet to the edge site includes rerouting the traffic packet by the serving gateway.

Abstract: A method for charging a user identified by a user identifier accessing a service in a LTE telecommunication network is provided. The network includes a base station, a core network with an enhanced serving gateway function, and an IP network. The method includes: analyzing all traffic packets originating from the user which connects to the network; forwarding the traffic packet to the core network if the traffic packet or the user sending it does not satisfy the policy or the service is not available at the edge site; offloading traffic packet outside the core network if it meets the policies configured in the serving gateway; routing of the traffic packet is done by the serving gateway; and sending from the serving gateway information about the offload traffic packets to the packet data network gateway located in the core network or to an Online Charging System.

Abstract: A method for creating a secure communication session between a user and an application server is provided. The method includes: providing a database associating a plurality of authorized user identifiers with a plurality of security credentials approved by the application server; assigning an IP address to the user; providing the serving gateway with the IP address and the user identifier of the user connected to the core network; checking whether the user identifier of the connected user to the core network is present in the database among the authorized user identifiers; forming a secure connection between the application server and the serving gateway using the security credential associated to the authorized user identifier of the user connected to the core network; and forwarding all packets from the application network addressed to the user via the secure connection to the user and vice versa.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus related to message compression/decompression are described. A compressed message is generated by indicating what changes are to be made to a previous message to produce the message sought to be transmitted. The required change, in the form of at least one command and corresponding parameter, is transmitted as a compressed version of the message being communicated. This approach takes advantage of the fact that messages sent over time often include much of the same message content and only one or a few fields may have changed. The techniques are general and involve including a command in the compressed message along with at least one parameter. The command indicates processing to be performed on a previous message to generate the uncompressed message. The parameter may be, e.g., data to be inserted into the previous message or specify a location in the previous message where the change is to be made.

Abstract: Embodiments describe mobility management utilizing neighbor discovery and at least two pseudo wires. When a wireless device desires to handoff to a detected access router, such handoff may not be configured until such time as a current access router receives routing information of the target access router. In order to minimize handoff time, communication between the target access router and the wireless device can be through the current access router utilizing least two pseudo wires. Bidirectional neighbor discovery and create is conducted by the access routers allow subsequent wireless devices to automatically handoff between the access routers.

Abstract: An apparatus comprising a policy enforcement point (PEP) configured to enforce firewall policies in a network, and a policy decision point (PDP) coupled to the PEP and configured to manage the PEP based on at least one firewall policy option received from at least one node. Also disclosed is a network component comprising at least one processor configured to implement a method comprising receiving a request from a node regarding a firewall policy entry, authenticating the node, processing the request to manage a firewall using a firewall control protocol, and sending a reply to the node regarding processing the request. Also disclosed is a method comprising signaling a PDP to establish a session associated with a source address and a requested protocol, and receiving an indication when the session is allowed.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for compressing messages used to support mobile communications are described. After transmission of a first mobile IP message which may be a conventional mobile IP message, a compressed mobile IP message is transmitted. The compressed message includes a new “compressed message” indicator and information which is to replace information in the previous message or to be added to the previous message to construct a new message. In some embodiments, the compressed message includes a mask field, e.g., a sequence of bits, each bit corresponding to one field of a standard registration request message or binding update message. If the mask flag bit corresponding to a field is set, it indicates that the compressed message includes information to replace the content in the corresponding field of the previous message or to be added to the previous message as a field corresponding to the asserted bit.
