  • Publication number: 20130222949
Abstract: A spin-torque oscillator with antiferromagnetically-coupled free layers has at least one of the free layers with increased magnetic damping. The Gilbert magnetic damping parameter (?) is at least 0.05. The damped free layer may contain as a dopant one or more damping elements selected from the group consisting of Pt, Pd and the 15 lanthanide elements. The free layer damping may also be increased by a damping layer adjacent the free layer. One type of damping layer may be an antiferromagnetic material, like a Mn alloy. As a modification to the antiferromagnetic damping layer, a bilayer damping layer may be formed of the antiferromagnetic layer and a nonmagnetic metal electrically conductive separation layer between the free layer and the antiferromagnetic layer. Another type of damping layer may be one formed of one or more of the elements selected from Pt, Pd and the lanthanides.

  • Publication number: 20130124942
Abstract: A data storage system includes a memory circuit and a control circuit. The control circuit is operable to receive data bits provided for storage in memory cells of the memory circuit. The control circuit is operable to compare each of the data bits provided for storage in a corresponding one of the memory cells having a stuck-at fault value to the stuck-at fault value. The control circuit is operable to generate encoded data bits by inverting each of the data bits having a different value than the stuck-at fault value of the corresponding one of the memory cells and by maintaining a digital value of each of the data bits having the stuck-at fault value of the corresponding one of the memory cells. The control circuit is operable to prevent any of the data bits from being stored in the memory cells determined to have unstable values. The control circuit is operable to generate redundant bits that indicate at least one operation to perform on the encoded data bits to regenerate the data bits.

  • Publication number: 20130114384
Abstract: A magnetic head, according to one embodiment, includes a magnetized high-speed rotor placed in the vicinity of a main magnetic pole, wherein the main magnetic pole generates a magnetized rotating magnetic field, wherein information is recorded by generating a high-frequency magnetic field from the magnetized high-speed rotor and switching the magnetic head between a magnetic resonance state and a magnetization state, and wherein the magnetic head has a structure such that leaking is reduced for magnetic fields applied parallel to a magnetized rotating surface of the magnetized high-speed rotor from the main magnetic pole. Additional systems and methods are also presented.

  • Publication number: 20130107680
Abstract: TAR enable write heads may use a plasmonic device (e.g., an optical transducer) which uses electromagnetic energy generated from a laser to heat the magnetic media. However, as the temperature of the plasmonic device rises, the likelihood of stressing the material of the device or other materials of the head near the plasmonic device increases. Accordingly, the write head may include a temperature sensor proximate to the plasmonic device. In one embodiment, the resistance of the temperature sensor may change according to the temperature of the plasmonic device. Based on the measured resistance of the temperature sensor, a sensing circuit may adjust the power of the laser, and thus, prevent the stressing of the materials. Moreover, the thermal coupling between the temperature sensor and a heat sink connected to the plasmonic device may be improved by moving elements associated with the sensing circuit closer to a heat sink.

  • Publication number: 20130074323
Abstract: A method for forming a seal for hermetically sealing a hard disk drive assembly. The method includes forming a solder channel within a top cover of a disk drive enclosure and disposing a solder preform on a base of the disk drive enclosure such that the solder preform aligns with the solder channel when the top cover is positioned on the base.
