It is possible to obtain a liquid crystal panel having increased freedom in the appearance, device weight reduction, simplified structure, etc. by improving the outer and/or inner surfaces of the device.

The viewing angle characteristics of low gradations are improved by the capacitive coupling HT method. The viewing angle characteristics of high gradations above the intermediate gradation are improved by the driving HT method. A liquid crystal is driven using the capacitive coupling HT method and the driving HT method in combination to combine the effect of improvement of both methods, thereby improving the viewing angle characteristics of a liquid crystal display for a wide range from a low gradation to a high gradation.
