  • Patent number: 5875864
Abstract: A control system is provided for a hybrid vehicle including an internal combustion engine, a drive shaft driven by the engine, a generator for converting kinetic energy of the drive shaft to electrical energy to generate electric power, and an electrical storage device for storing electrical energy output from the generator. Deceleration of the engine is detected. Supply of fuel to the engine is interrupted during the deceleration of the engine. An amount of intake air supplied to the engine is controlled such that the amount of intake air supplied to the engine is increased when the generator regenerates electrical energy during the deceleration of the engine. Calculation is made of an amount of electrical energy to be regenerated by the generator during the deceleration of the engine. An output from the generator is controlled based on the amount of electrical energy calculated.

  • Patent number: 5713197
Abstract: There is provided a catalyst deterioration-detecting system for an internal combustion engine having at least one catalyst arranged in the exhaust passage, for purifying noxious components present in exhaust gases emitted from the engine, and an exhaust gas component concentration sensor arranged in the exhaust passage at a location downstream of the catalyst, for detecting concentration of a specific component in the exhaust gases. An ECU of the system controls the ignition timing of the engine, and detects the degree of deterioration of the catalyst, based on an output value from the exhaust gas component concentration sensor. The ignition timing of the engine is retarded in dependence on the detected degree of deterioration of the catalyst.

  • Patent number: 5297532
Abstract: A supercharged internal combustion engine includes an intake passage, a supercharger arranged in the intake passage, an exhaust passage, and a catalytic converter arranged in the exhaust passage. A supercharging pressure control system for the engine controls the opening of a supercharging pressure control valve for controlling supercharging pressure of intake air supplied to the engine by the supercharger. When the temperature of the catalytic converter falls outside a predetermined range, the opening of the control valve is controlled in a manner such that the temperature of the catalytic converter is brought into the predetermined range.

  • Patent number: 5243947
Abstract: A fuel injection control system is provided for use in a cylinder injection/spark ignition type internal combustion engine in which fuel is injected directly into cylinders through respective fuel injection valves mounted in the cylinder heads. An ECU determines a desired fuel injection amount based upon the engine rotational speed and an engine load condition, determines desired fuel pressure to be supplied to the fuel injection valves and controls the actual fuel supply pressure relative to the desired fuel pressure. The ECU causes fuel to be supplied under the desired fuel pressure to each of the fuel injection valves, based upon the engine rotational speed and injected thereby into the corresponding cylinder when the crank angle of the engine falls within a predetermined range in the vicinity of a top dead point of the cylinder corresponding to a compression stroke thereof. The predetermined crank angle range is set to a range of 20.degree. BTDC to 5.degree. ATDC.

  • Patent number: 5239963
Abstract: An ignition timing control system controls ignition timing of spark plugs of an internal combustion engine associated with a plurality of changeover devices, changeover of an operative state of each of which has influence upon output torque of the engine. Operating conditions of the engine are detected. A basic ignition timing advance value is calculated based on results of detection of the operating conditions of the engine. A changeover of the operative state of each of the changeover devices is detected. A correction value for correcting the basic ignition timing advance value for suppressing the engine torque is calculated, in response to results of detection of the changeover of the operative state of each of the changeover devices.

  • Patent number: 5199403
Abstract: An air-fuel ratio control system for an internal combustion engine having at least one intake valve with its valve timing changeable at least between low-speed valve timing suitable for engine operation in a low engine rotational speed region, and high-speed valve timing suitable for engine operation in a high engine rotational speed region. When changeover is to be effected from the low-speed valve timing to the high-speed valve timing, an ECU changes the desired air-fuel ratio to be applied when the low-speed valve timing is selected, to one to be applied when the high-speed valve timing is selected, and changes the valve timing to the high-speed valve timing after the desired air-fuel ratio has been changed to the one to be applied when the high-speed valve timing is selected.

  • Patent number: 5172674
Abstract: An internal combustion engine having an assist air supply device for finely dividing injected fuel and an exhaust gas recirculation device for selectively circulating an exhaust gas from an exhaust passage into an air intake passage. In this internal combustion engine, a swirl operation for a lean burn during a low load on the engine and a non-swirl operation for a burn based on a theoretical air-fuel ratio can be selectively switched between such operations. In the non-swirl operation, the supply of an assist air and the recirculation of a large amount of an exhaust gas are carried out. This makes it possible to reduce both specific consumption of fuel and the amount of NO.sub.x in the exhaust gas over the entire operational region of the engine.

  • Patent number: 4739741
Abstract: A method of controlling fuel supply to an internal combustion engine at the start thereof. A fuel quantity to be supplied to said engine is set in dependence on a temperature of the engine when the engine is in a predetermined starting condition, and the fuel quantity thus set is corrected to an increased value by means of a correction value which varies with a rise in the rotational speed of the engine. The varying rate of the correction value is set in dependence on the engine temperature such that the set fuel quantity decreases at a first rate with a rise in the engine rotational speed when the engine temperature is higher than a predetermined value, and at a second rate smaller than the first rate with a rise in the engine rotational speed when the engine temperature is lower than the predetermined value. The set fuel quantity is corrected by means of the correction value having its varying rate set as above while the engine is in the predetermined starting condition.
