The recording layer has an array of a plurality of cells having different refractive indices which are changed when irradiated with a light beam. The intensity of the light beam is modulated according to information. Irradiating the recording layer with the modulated light beam causes changes in the refractive index according to the intensity of the light beam. In another aspect, the wavelength of the light beam is changed within a predetermined range including at least one wavelength at which multiple interference occurs between the first and second reflecting layers with respect to each cell.
