    Abstract: A hydraulic excavator capable of achieving suppression of decrease in weight of a counterweight and appropriate arrangement of an exhaust gas treatment device is provided. First and second exhaust gas treatment devices are disposed in an order of the second exhaust gas treatment device and the first exhaust gas treatment device from a center toward an end in a lateral direction. A rear end of the first exhaust gas treatment device is arranged forward relative to a rear end of the second exhaust gas treatment device. A counterweight has, in its inner peripheral surface, a second surface portion on a central side in the lateral direction in a plan view and a fourth surface portion on an end side. The fourth surface portion protrudes forward relative to the second surface portion, and a step portion is formed between the second surface portion and the fourth surface portion.
