Abstract: Disclosed are various embodiments for registration of destination identifiers to be used in lieu of geographic addresses. In one embodiment, a user specification of a destination identifier is received. It is determined that the destination identifier is available for registration. A user request is received to register the destination identifier as associated with a geographic address. The destination identifier is registered in response to the user request by creating a stored mapping between the destination identifier and the geographic address.

Abstract: Disclosed are various embodiments relating to the identification of events that occur within a media item. A plurality of messages are received from client devices, wherein each of the messages comprises a timestamp indicating a time relative to a media item. The existence of an event in the media item is determined based at least in part on a clustering of at least a subset of the messages received. Points are awarded to a subset of users based at least in part upon the timestamp and the clustering of messages received.

Abstract: Some examples include determining a proximity between a first user device and a plurality of other user devices based at least in part on comparing location information of the first user device with location information for the plurality of other user devices. Additionally, a commonality may be determined that is associated with at least some user profiles of the other users, but is unassociated with a user profile of the first user. For example, the commonality may have a frequency of occurrence among the user profiles of the other users that is greater than the frequency of occurrence among user profiles associated with a larger population. In other examples, a first portable computing device may receive profile information from a nearby second portable computing device for determining a compatibility between a first user profile and a second user profile.

Abstract: Age data is calculated and stored that describes the age of one or more elements in a Web page, such as images or hyperlinks. The age data may be utilized to modify the Web page such that the age of each Web page element is visually presented when the Web page is rendered. For example, the Web page may be configured such that a region is overlaid upon each element that is colored or shaded based upon the age of the element. Colored or shaded borders might also be applied to the Web page elements that indicate the age of each Web page element. The age data might also be utilized to modify the Web page such that the frequency at which each page element has been changed will be visually presented when the Web page is rendered. The age data might also be correlated to other Web page statistics.

Abstract: An electronic device can utilize image information to determine a proper orientation with which to render content. In some embodiments, a camera of a computing device can capture one or more images to attempt to determine a relative location (or direction) of a user by identifying a feature of a user or by using objects in the image to determine a likely direction of a user. Based at least in part on this information, as well as information from position and motion sensors of the device in some embodiments, a device can determine a relative position of a user, and can cause content to be rendered by the device with an orientation that is appropriate for that position, where the orientation can also depend upon the type of content or other such factors. Such an approach can determine proper orientations in situations where conventional sensor-based approaches are not sufficient.

A user might access the same piece of content on two different devices, and can automatically receive a higher quality format on a device capable of playing that higher quality format. The user can purchase rights to content in any format, such that as new formats emerge or the user upgrades to devices with enhanced capabilities, the user can receive the improved formats automatically without having to repurchase the content. Further, the user can pause and resume content between devices even when those devices utilize different formats, and can access content on devices not otherwise associated with the user, receiving content in formats that are appropriate for those unknown devices even if the user has not previously accessed content in those formats.

For example, the systems and methods can be used to determine that a particular user is attending, is planning to attend, has already attended, or is about to attend a particular event, such as a movie, concert, tour, etc. Further, upon determining that a user is attending, has already attended, or is about to attend an event, systems and methods can be used to serve to a device, associated with the user, content that is related to the event. For example, the content may include invites that invite the user to provide a review of the event and to join a discussion about the event. Further, for example, the content may include links to websites that provide reviews and other information about the event, provide information about related events, or that offer related items for sale.

Abstract: Location data that corresponds to one or more user devices each associated with a user may be obtained. Based on the location data, the particular location of a user may be determined. Similarities between various users may be identified when it is determined that those users have visited the same locations. Upon at least two users visiting a threshold amount of the same locations, one or more recommendations may be provided to the users, whereby the recommendations relate to places that those users have yet to visit. In addition, the users may have the opportunity to reveal information about themselves to other users, while maintaining their anonymity. As a result, the users may meet people and learn about new places that are likely to be of interest to those users.
