Abstract: A magnetic recording medium for use in video and other applications is presented which comprises a substrate, a continuous thin magnetic layer of cobalt and at least one selected from nickel, chromium, and oxygen, preferably obliquely evaporated on the substrate, and a topcoat formed over the magnetic layer and made of a phosphate compound having the formula: ##STR1## where R is selected from the group consisting of substituted or unsubstituted alkyl radicals having 10 to 22 carbon atoms which may be saturated or have an unsaturated double bond in their backbone, and substituted or unsubstituted aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl and alkylarylalkyl radicals having 6 to 20 carbon atoms, andY.sup.1 and Y.sup.2 may be the same or different and selected from the group consisting of hydrogen atom, cations, and substituted or unsubstituted alkyl and aryl radicals, the alkyl radicals being saturated or having an unsaturated double bond in their backbone, and Y.sup.1 and Y.sup.2 may together represent a divalent cation.

Abstract: A magnetic recording medium has plural magnetic layers on a non-magnetic substrate. The magnetic particles are orientated in substantially the same tilt direction for major axes of the particles in each magnetic layer and in cross tilt directions for major axes of the particles in the adjacent magnetic layers.

Abstract: A thin metallic layer type magnetic recording medium having thin metallic layers in a structure comprises a layer in which a tilt angle of a metallic particle direction to the normal line to said substrate gradually increases depending upon an increase of a distance from said substrate; and a layer in which a tilt angle of a metallic particle direction to the normal line to said substrate gradually decreases depending upon an increase of a distance from said substrate.

Abstract: A magnetic recording medium is prepared by a tilt vapor deposition of magnetic particles from a vapor thereof on a substrate running along a peripheral surface of a cylindrical can in vacuum wherein plural cans are used to deposit said magnetic particles at substantially the same tilt angle on each of said cans.
