  • Patent number: 7064928
Abstract: Method and apparatus are presented for electrically coupling a slider to ground. In one embodiment, a bonding pad is provided on a side of the slider body separate from the bonding pad(s) used for read/write signals. This separate bonding pad is electrically coupled within the slider body to components that are to be coupled to ground. A separate conductor provided on the suspension (e.g., a trace, a flex circuit, etc.) may be electrically coupled to the separate bonding pad via gold ball bonding. The conductor is also coupled to ground in the hard-disk drive device (e.g., via the preamplifier). The use of the separated bonding pad and trace may negate the need to use a conductive adhesive to electrically ground the slider via its attachment to the tongue of a slider.

  • Patent number: 6753719
Abstract: A well bias controller receives input from a sensor. The sensor indicates when a desired threshold condition, such as a temperature or current limit has been exceeded. Threshold conditions are chosen so that when the threshold condition is exceeded, the amount of current drawn by the well bias circuit and through the transistor exceeds the amount of leakage current that would otherwise occur in the device if a well bias circuit were not used. Whenever it is determined, based on the threshold condition, that the well bias circuit is using more current than a device would otherwise leak, the controller turns the well bias circuit off.

The semiconductor substrate includes a first doped region below the first well region. The first well region and the first doped region are doped with a first type dopant and the first well region is electrically connected to the first doped region. An isolation region is formed between the first well region and the first doped region. The isolation region is electrically connected to a second well region. The isolation region and the second well region are doped with a second dopant type The second dopant type is opposite the first dopant type. In one embodiment, the first type dopant includes a p-type dopant, and the second type dopant includes an n-type dopant. The method may further include, forming a second doped region within the first well region and below the isolation region.

  • Patent number: 5801505
Abstract: A disk drive including firmware for overcoming stiction and breaking free the heads of a disk drive which may adhere to the disk surface when the disk is at rest. Upon start-up of the disk drive, if stiction at the head/disk interface occurs, the voltage to the spindle motor and/or actuator motor may be rapidly fluctuated so as to cause a pulsing of the spindle motor and/or actuator motor. Pulsing both the spindle motor and actuator motor creates forces in a plurality of radial directions to allow the head(s) to break free from the disk(s) in the direction of least resistance. Moreover, as the resonant frequency of the spindle motor varies depending on the number of heads that are stuck, the firmware pulses over a range of frequencies including the various resonant frequencies of the spindle motor corresponding to various numbers of heads stuck.

  • Patent number: 5768055
Abstract: A magnetic head is described for use in a disk drive having a disk that is rotated during operation of the disk drive and stationary when the disk drive is non-operational. The disk includes a surface containing data tracks. The magnetic head compromises a slider including a forward edge, a trailing edge and an air bearing surface. A read/write transducer is mounted at the trailing edge of the slider. The slider and transducer are mounted within the disk drive, relative to the surface of the rotating disk, to fly above the surface of the disk during rotation of the disk, for reading and writing data from and to the data tracks, and to come to rest on the surface of the disk during non-operation of the disk drive.

  • Patent number: 5742446
Abstract: A method for testing slider/disk contact in a disk drive is described. The disk drive comprises a rotating disk having tracks and a head mounted by an actuator for selective positioning of the head over any one of the tracks of the disk. The head includes a slider. The method comprises the steps of positioning the head at each of a preselected set of tracks, while at each one of the preselected set of tracks, rotating the disk of the disk drive at a preselected rotational velocity and using the head of the disk drive, at each track, to write a signal having a substantially uniform pattern on the disk as it rotates. Thereafter, rotating the disk at a fixed preselected rotational velocity, and while rotating at the fixed preselected rotational velocity, using the head to read back the signals written at each one of the preselected set of tracks. The read back signals are used to determine rotational velocities at which slider/disk contact occurs.

  • Patent number: 5545989
Abstract: A method is described for testing for slider/disk contact in a disk drive comprising a rotating disk and a head mounted by an actuator for selective positioning of the head over the disk, the head having a slider, and a spindle motor for rotating the disk. The method comprises the steps of providing power to the spindle motor to cause rotation of the disk at a preselected rotational velocity corresponding to a rotational velocity designed for the disk during normal read/write operation, and thereafter withdrawing the power from the spindle motor such that the disk spins down to zero rotational velocity. While the disk spins down to zero rotational velocity, an acoustic coupling is formed between an acoustic emission sensor having an electric output and the spindle motor to provide first electric signals representative of acoustic emissions from the spindle motor, including acoustic emissions caused by slider/disk contact.

  • Patent number: 5497085
Abstract: A method is shown for testing a magnetic disk to be used in a disk drive. The method includes the steps of measuring a height profile of an outer radial edge of the disk, using the profile to determine a slope value for each of a pair of radial segments of the disk, calculating a difference value between the slope values of the pair, comparing the difference value to a preselected threshold difference value and indicating when the difference value is equal to or less than the threshold difference value. The threshold value indicates an outer most diameter of the disk where fly height operation for a head is still stable.
