  • Patent number: 6715537
Abstract: A device for the continuous casting of metal includes a lifting platform which can be driven in an oscillating fashion by a drive device, a continuous casting mold received on the lifting platform, and a stationarily arranged support frame provided with guiding or bearing elements for the lifting platform. The guiding or bearing element is an elastic spring system including two spring legs arranged angularly relative to one another and extending perpendicularly to the oscillation direction. The two spring legs are formed like a tuning fork and respectively overlapping upper and lower ends of the two spring legs form the support surface for the lifting platform or the connecting surface with the stationarily arranged support frame. The spring system, in addition to the force in the oscillation direction, compensates by load balancing disturbing forces in directions perpendicular to the oscillation direction.

  • Patent number: 6474404
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for controlling the temperature of a melt (10), preferably of a steel melt, in a distributing vessel (11), whereby the temperature of the melt is measured, the measured result is compared with a predetermined temperature range in the form of specified values, and as much heat is supplied or withdrawn from the melt such that the temperature remains inside said range. In order to control the melt temperature, a fireproof shaped part (20) which is closed on both sides and which is provided for accommodating a liquid cooled induction coil (1) is immersed in the melt (10). The transmission of heat is carried out by means of thermal conduction out of the wall of the shaped part (20) which is coupled to the induced electromagnetic field and/or by means of a direct coupling to the liquid melt (10).

  • Patent number: 4719960
Abstract: Means are provided for connecting the proximal end of a dummy strip to the distal (i.e. leading) end of a strip casting, in which a throw-away element serving both as a connector and a heat sink for chilling the metal adjacent to the connector is removably mounted on the proximal end of the dummy strip, with a slightly resilient sealing element holding both the dummy strip and the connector-heat sink element centrally of the mold cavity, and with the connector-heat sink spaced from the walls of the mold by a narrow gap and also having means for both chilling and positively interlocking with the metal of the distal end of the cast strip when it congeals.

  • Patent number: 4705094
Abstract: A continuous casting apparatus has a casting platform which supports a mold defining two casting passages. A laterally undivided roller guide is disposed below the mold. The apparatus further includes a pair of dummy bars, and a carriage on the casting platform for storing the dummy bars. When a casting operation is to be performed, each dummy bar is lowered into the roller guide via a respective casting passage so as to seal the lower end of such passage. At this time, the dummy bars are spaced from, and are generally parallel to, one another. Since the roller guide is laterally undivided, the roller guide is unable to maintain the spacing between the dummy bars as the latter are withdrawn from the roller guide during casting. Accordingly, distancing means is provided to keep the dummy bars spaced from one another.

  • Patent number: 4572277
Abstract: A vertical continuous casting mold has a pair of wide walls, and a pair of narrow walls which are received between the wide walls. The narrow walls are translatable back-and-forth, and also pivotable, in order to change the width of a strand cast in the mold. Each of the narrow walls is driven by an arrangement which permits the respective narrow wall to be remotely adjusted during casting. The arrangement for each narrow wall includes a pair of internally threaded sleeves which are respectively articulated to an upper and a lower portion of the corresponding wall. A rotatable spindle is threaded into each sleeve. The spindles are operative to cause axial displacement of the associated sleeves in response to rotation of the spindles. The two spindles for each narrow wall are rotated by a common motor. A first transmission transmits motion from the motor to one of the spindles, and a second transmission transmits motion from the motor to the other spindle.
