  • Patent number: 4481121
Abstract: A viscosifier for an oil base drilling fluid of the type used in well drilling and workover procedures is shown which comprises an effective amount of a montan wax dispersed within the fluid to provide the needed viscosity and gel strength to properly suspend solids in the drilling fluid. Montan wax is dispersed in an oil base which contains as little as about 5 volume percent water. A basic material, such as lime, reacts in the water with the montan wax, and the partial saponification which results produces a thixotropic drilling fluid.

  • Patent number: 4417900
Abstract: A solid fire starter which will provide a high temperature consisting of a mixture of hexamethylenetetramine, magnesium powder, an oxygen producing chemical, and a binder. The preferred proportion of magnesium to hexamethylenetetramine is about 2 to 3. The preferred oxygen-producing chemicals include tartaric acid and sodium nitrate. The preferred composition comprises 80 parts of magnesium powder, 120 parts of hexamethylenetetramine, 50 parts tartaric acid, 100 parts sodium nitrate, and 45 parts of wax.

  • Patent number: 4222988
Abstract: Method and apparatus for removing hydrocarbons from drill cuttings is disclosed. The method involves heating the contaminated drill cuttings at a pressure lower than atmospheric pressure, milling the cuttings to expose hydrocarbons trapped within agglomerates of the material, and separating the vapors thereby produced from the cuttings. The cleaned cuttings can be used or disposed of without damage to the environment. The vaporized hydrocarbons may be condensed and recovered.
