  • Patent number: 4254669
Abstract: A shaft transmission has coaxial tubular input and output shafts extending forwardly and backwardly from the transmission. Front and rear planet assemblies in the transmission include respective sun gears, planet carriers, and ring gears. The front planet carrier is fixed on an outer shaft enclosing the entire transmission. The rear sun gear is fixed rotationally to the input shaft. The rear planet carrier is fixed rotationally both to the front sun gear and to the output shaft. The rear ring gear is fixed rotationally to the front ring gear. Such a transmission divides the load between the front and rear planet assemblies while giving a substantial stepdown in the neighborhood of 4:1. In addition the input and output shafts form a throughgoing passage through which a fluid medium, such as drilling mud, can be passed.

  • Patent number: 3995503
Abstract: The transmission ratio of a multiple-speed hub for a bicycle or like vehicle may be changed by axially shifting the ring gear of a planetary gear transmission in the hub shell against the restraint of a return spring. A pawl on the ring gear and/or ratchet teeth on the hub shell have cooperating engagement faces which are obliquely inclined relative to the hub axis in such a manner that the driving force transmitted by the pawl to the ring gear has an axial component in the direction of the return spring action, thereby further axially securing the ring gear in at least one speed position of the hub, minimizing avoidable clearances, and reducing wear of the gear elements.

  • Patent number: 3937309
Abstract: The driver in a three-speed bicycle hub may be coupled alternatively with the planet carrier or the ring gear of the planetary gear transmission in the hub shell by means of radial arms on a coupling sleeve which is shifted axially between terminal positions of engagement with the carrier and the ring gear respectively for highest and intermediate transmission ratio. The engaged ring gear may further be shifted axially by the coupling sleeve from its normal position against the restraint of a spring to establish a third, lower transmission ratio. The coupling elements of the planet carrier and ring gear are normally closer to each other than the axial length of the coupling sleeve arms. The radial arms cammingly cooperate with coupling elements on the planet carrier and/or the ring gear to shift the arms automatically into a terminal position from any intermediate position in response to relative rotation of the associated transmission members.
