  • Patent number: 4793459
Abstract: A conveyor roller comprises a steel roller tube fitted with end cap assemblies incorporating bearings for rotatably mounting the roller tube on a fixed shaft. Each end cap assembly comprises a rigid housing which supports the bearing, and a separate collar of resilient plastics material mounted on the housing. The axially inner end portion of the collar has an annular recess which receives a radial flange on the housing, and the axially outer end portion of the collar consists of inner and outer tubular walls which are spaced apart prior to fitting of the end cap assembly in the roller tube. The external surface of the inner tubular wall is curved radially inwards and axially outwards. Each end cap assembly is secured in position by swaging the end of the tube so as to force the outer wall of the collar against the inner wall along its length.

  • Patent number: 4632576
Abstract: A conveyor roller has end caps forming housings for ball bearing units rotatably mounting the conveyor roller on a spindle, each housing having an end wall forming an abutment for locating the bearing in the housing, and the spindle having circlips abutting the bearing units. Each bearing unit has inboard and outboard seals mounted on the outer bearing ring, and the inboard seal is formed with projections which are compressed axially with permanent deformation between the inboard seal and the end wall of the housing, so as to function as a spacer. The projections are spaced symmetrically around the axis of the bearing unit, and each projection is symmetrical about a radial plane through the center of the projection. The projections are formed integral with the seal or consist of separate V-shaped elements mounted in slots in a side face of the seal. The inboard seal is formed with a recess for each projection, the recess having a depth to accommodate the projection when in a fully collapsed condition.

  • Patent number: 4557612
Abstract: A ball bearing fitted with seals mounted on the outer bearing ring and co-operating with sealing surfaces on the inner bearing ring to prevent or restrict entry of fluid into the bearing. The axially outer face of each seal is formed with protrusions spaced at equal intervals around the seal and positioned adjacent its sealing surface, each protrusion having deflecting surfaces arranged to throw or deflect any debris on the sealing surface outwards away from the bearing upon relative rotation between the two members. Each seal comprises an annular disc-like body of resilient material and an annular reinforcing skirt of rigid material, the inner periphery of the body having an annular lip which projects into an annular groove in its sealing surface.

  • Patent number: 4555188
Abstract: A bearing and seal assembly in which the seal has an outer casing formed with claws which are engaged in an annular groove in the outer periphery of the outer bearing ring, and a resilient annular lip or washer compressed between the outer casing and the adjacent side wall of the bearing ring and urging the outer casing away from the bearing ring, so as to engage the claws as a tight fit against a side wall of the annular groove. In one embodiment, the outer casing of the seal is made of resilient material and the annular lip is formed integral with the casing. In another embodiment, a non-planar washer of resilient material is compressed between a step on the outer casing and the adjacent side wall of the outer bearing ring.
