  • Patent number: 5730949
Abstract: An improved process is disclosed for producing a metals containing anisotropic pitch product suitable for carbon fiber manufacture. Soluble-aromatic, organometallic compounds are added to a carbonaceous feedstock substantially free of mesophase pitch and the resulting composition is heat soaked preferably with gas sparge to produce a metals containing mesophase pitch.

  • Patent number: 5540903
Abstract: This application relates to a process for making carbon artifacts from solvated mesophase pitch comprising quinoline insoluble materials. The process has a significant advantage over the art as it permits the use of otherwise unusable pitch feedstocks and the artifacts formed according to the process retain their structural integrity during carbonization. This invention also relates to the pitch formed by this process and carbon artifacts formed by this process.

  • Patent number: 5032250
Abstract: Isotropic pitch containing mesogens is combined with a solvent and subjected to dense phase or supercritical conditions and the mesogens are phase separated. In one aspect the isotropic pitch containing mesogens is fluxed with a solvent to solubilize the mesogens, the flux mixture is filtered to remove nonsolubles and the mesogens are phase separated by use of the same solvent under dense phase or supercritical conditions of temperature and pressure. The phase separation conditions are such that the mesogens are recovered as mesophase.

  • Patent number: 4931162
Abstract: A clean pitch suitable for the manufacture of carbon artifacts is obtained by distilling from an aromatic feedstock a distillate material free from mesophase forming resins. The distillate is heated to obtain a heat soaked distillate free from mesophase but containing mesophase forming resins. The heat soaked distillate is further heated with inert gas sparging to convert it to mesophase pitch suitable for manufacturing carbon fibers. The heat soaked distillate also finds use as a binder or impregnation pitch.

  • Patent number: 4892642
Abstract: An improved process for producing an anisotropic pitch product suitable for carbon fiber manufacture. A carbonaceous feedstock substantially free of mesophase pitch is heated at elevated temperature while passing an oxidatively reactive sparging gas such as air through the feedstock. The oxidatively treated feedstock, which contains isotropic pitch, is solvent fractionated to recover a solid pitch which on fusion becomes an anisotropic pitch product having from 50 to 100 percent by volume mesophase. In one aspect of the invention the carbonaceous feedstock is oxidatively treated in a melt phase at a lower temperature and the resulting isotropic pitch is then heated at a higher temperature in a melt phase in the presence or absence of a non-oxidative sparging gas prior to solvent fractionation.

  • Patent number: 4832820
Abstract: A mesophase pitch suitable for carbon fiber production is produced by heat soaking a heavy aromatic hydrocarbon feedstock at conditions such that a substantial part of the feedstock is converted to mesophase pitch. The mesophase pitch is separated from the heat soaked material by settling at a pressure higher than the pressure of the heat soaking step. In one embodiment, separate mesophase pitches having different properties can be recovered from the heat soaked feedstock.

  • Patent number: 4430197
Abstract: A hydrogen donor diluent cracking process in which the pitch fraction from the cracking step is heat soaked in the presence of hydrogen donor solvent and then returned to the cracking coil.

  • Patent number: 4014803
Abstract: Novel compounds, which are useful as additives in lubricating oils, are disclosed. The novel compounds are represented by the formula ##STR1## wherein R is an alkenyl group containing 10 to 100 carbon atoms; R' is an alkylene group containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms; n is an integer of 1 to 4; X is selected from the group consisting of NH.sub.2, NR"R", NHR", and OR"; and Y is selected from the group consisting of NR"R", NHR", OR", and halogen, wherein R" is alkyl, phenyl, alkyl-substituted phenyl, or alkylene polyamino.
