  • Patent number: 5277774
Abstract: The present invention relates to a free flow electrophoresis method between two ion permeable membranes comprising applying an electric field perpendicular to the primary carrier flow, applying a secondary carrier flow perpendicular to both the primary buffer flow and the electric field, simultaneously reversing the direction of the field and secondary carrier flow, and repeating the previous step until effective separation occurs.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 21, 1992
Date of Patent: January 11, 1994
Inventors: Joseph L. Shmidt, Huk Y. Cheh
  • Patent number: 5131994
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for effecting an electrophoretic separation of charged particles. A fractionation chamber comprising a semipermeable membrane is used wherein a transmembrane force holds the particles to be separated against the membrane surface while a voltage gradient is applied to separate the particles.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 17, 1990
Date of Patent: July 21, 1992
Inventors: Joseph L. Shmidt, Huk Y. Cheh

  • Patent number: 5023114
Abstract: Plastics, particularly a method of hydrophilic coating of plastics, for example, a contact lens, with a lubricating and visually acute mucopolysaccharide film which is immobilized upon the surface of the plastic for the lifetime of the plastic. A preferred method includes first coating the plastic with an aqueous solution of a mucopolysaccharide, drying by applying a water-miscible solvent, then crosslinking and permanently immobilizing the first coating upon the plastic by applying a solution of catalyzed organic soluble aliphatic polyisocyanate.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 2, 1990
Date of Patent: June 11, 1991
Inventors: Gregory Halpern, Charles Campbell, Ellington M. Beavers, Huk Y. Cheh
