Publication number: 20240127683Abstract: In an example method, a mobile device obtains a signal indicating an acceleration measured by a sensor over a time period. The mobile device determines an impact experienced by the user based on the signal. The mobile device also determines, based on the signal, one or more first motion characteristics of the user during a time prior to the impact, and one or more second motion characteristics of the user during a time after the impact. The mobile device determines that the user has fallen based on the impact, the one or more first motion characteristics of the user, and the one or more second motion characteristics of the user, and in response, generates a notification indicating that the user has fallen.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 11, 2023Publication date: April 18, 2024Inventors: Xing Tan, Huayu Ding, Parisa Dehleh Hossein Zadeh, Harshavardhan Mylapilli, Hung A. Patent number: 11469765Abstract: A system and corresponding method that achieves coherency and deterministic latency (CDL) autonomously upon power on is disclosed. The system, for example, a multi-channel RF system, may require CDL with respect to the digital-to-analog converters (DACs) and analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) assigned to the channels in the system. CDL is achieved through a timed combination of external reference and synchronization signals, resetting and disabling of various clock dividers, and enabling clock generation. In addition to synchronizing all of the clocks, the data acquisition sequence must be synchronized across all of the channels, whether they are on chips, cards, or chassis. Data acquisition synchronization may be implemented using an initiator/target or a wired OR mode configuration.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 2021Date of Patent: October 11, 2022Assignee: National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLCInventors: Charles E. Patent number: 10788568Abstract: A radar system wherein a radar return is channelized by frequency into a plurality of channels, and each of the channels is sampled by a respective analog-to-digital converter that has a sampling rate less than the Nyquist rate of the radar return. The digitally sampled channel signals are Fourier transformed into the frequency domain, where each of the frequency-domain channel signals is matched-filtered according to a respective partial matched filter. The channel signals are then transformed back to the time domain, whereupon they are added together to generate the impulse response of the radar system responsive to the radar return.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 2018Date of Patent: September 29, 2020Assignee: National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLCInventors: Hung Loui, Brianna Maio

Patent number: 10720703Abstract: Various embodiments presented herein relate to determining mutual coupling between a pair of antennas in an array antenna. Various operations presented herein enable comparison between a magnitude and phase of a signal transmitted from a first feed network (via a first antenna) and a magnitude and phase of a portion of the signal received at a second feed network (via a second antenna). Electrical effects engendered by any of the first feed network, a first switch, a first local circuit, the second feed network, a second switch, and a second local circuit can also be determined and their effects mathematically removed. Based upon the foregoing, a mutual coupling between the pair of antenna is determined.Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 2019Date of Patent: July 21, 2020Assignee: National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLCInventors: Hung Loui, Thomas Edward Christian, Jr.

Patent number: 10615495Abstract: Technologies pertaining to the calibration of ultra-wide-band active-electronically-scanned arrays to compensate for transmit and receive mutual coupling between array elements and/or non-ideal isolated channels are described herein. A plurality of near-field measurements are taken by way of probe or probes that may be moved among a plurality of positions aligned with respective elements in the array. For each position of the probe, each of the elements of the array is stimulated to transmit or receive a calibration signal to or from the probe, respectively. Frequency-domain transfer functions are computed from the received signals by the probe or the element for each of the array elements in each of the positions of the probe. The inverse of the matrix of transfer functions comprise frequency-domain transmit and receive correction factors that are used to modify desired array inputs/outputs such that the modified signals correct for mutual coupling between elements in the array.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 2017Date of Patent: April 7, 2020Assignee: National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLCInventor: Hung Loui

Patent number: 9923284Abstract: The various embodiments presented herein relate to extraordinary electromagnetic transmission (EEMT) to enable multiple inefficient (un-matched) but coupled radiators and/or apertures to radiate and/or pass electromagnetic waves efficiently. EEMT can be utilized such that signal transmission from a plurality of antennas and/or apertures occurs at a transmission frequency different to transmission frequencies of the individual antennas and/or aperture elements. The plurality of antennas/apertures can comprise first antenna/aperture having a first radiating area and material(s) and second antenna/aperture having a second radiating area and material(s), whereby the first radiating/aperture area and second radiating/aperture area can be co-located in a periodic compound unit cell. Owing to mutual coupling between the respective antennas/apertures in their arrayed configuration, the transmission frequency of the array can be shifted from the transmission frequencies of the individual elements.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 2015Date of Patent: March 20, 2018Assignee: National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLCInventors: Hung Loui, Bernd H. Patent number: 9479232Abstract: The various embodiments presented herein relate to beam steering an array antenna by modifying intermediate frequency (IF) waveforms prior to conversion to RF signals. For each channel, a direct digital synthesis (DDS) component can be utilized to generate a waveform or modify amplitude, timing and phase of a waveform relative to another waveform, whereby the generation/modification can be performed prior to the IF input port of a mixer on each channel. A local oscillator (LO) signal can be utilized to commonly drive each of the mixers. After conversion at the RF output port of each of the mixers, each RF signal can be transmitted by a respective antenna element in the antenna array. Initiation of transmission of each RF signal can be performed simultaneously at each antenna. The process can be reversed during receive whereby timing, amplitude, and phase of the received can be modified digitally post ADC conversion.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 2015Date of Patent: October 25, 2016Assignee: Sandia CorporationInventors: Hung Loui, Billy C.
