Publication number: 20040242441Abstract: A continuously variable transmission fluid comprises a hydrogenated cyclic dimer of &agr;-alkyl styrene and a low temperature viscosity control agent. The fluid does not contain more than 20 wt. % of a linear dimer of the &agr;-alkyl styrene, and the fluid has a kinematic viscosity of greater than about 2.5×10−6 m2/s at 100° C., as measured according to ASTM D-445. The dimerized &agr;-alkyl styrene can be made by (a) contacting an &agr;-alkyl styrene with a supported acid catalyst to effect oligomerization of the &agr;-alkyl styrene to a cyclic dimer; and (b) hydrogenating the cyclic dimer in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst to produce a fully hydrogenated cyclic dimer, wherein the &agr;-alkyl styrene is contacted with the supported acid catalyst in the absence of a solvent for the &agr;-alkyl styrene and a free acid.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 24, 2003Publication date: December 2, 2004Applicant: Pennzoil-Quaker State CompanyInventor: I-Ching Chiu

Patent number: 6730818Abstract: A novel series of copolymers and terpolymers, useful as base oils for synthetic lubricants, are produced by polymerization of ethylene, an alpha-olefin, and optionally a third monomer comprising an alpha-olefin of 3 to 20 carbon atoms, in the presence of a combination catalyst comprising a compound of a transition metal of Group IVb of the Periodic Table and an aluminoxane. The copolymer or terpolymer may be further processed by thermal cracking to yield novel cracked polymers, and the cracked polymers may be hydrogenated. The copolymers or terpolymers may also be hydroisomerized. All the polymers are useful as base oils for lubricating oils and consumer products.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 2002Date of Patent: May 4, 2004Assignee: Penzoil-Quaker State CompanyInventors: William J. Publication number: 20030186824Abstract: A biodegradable lubricant that is at least 60% biodegradable and has a gelation index of about 12 or less can be formulated using a transesterified triglyceride base oil together with a synthetic ester. A combination of an ester viscosity index improver and an olefin copolymer viscosity index improver also can be added. Further, the composition can be blended with mineral oils to lower the polarity in order to employ standard dispersant/inhibitor packages. Further, by mixing high and low viscosities of mineral oil in the formulation, it is possible to prepare a full range of SAE grade engine oils for gasoline-fueled and diesel-fueled engines.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 24, 2002Publication date: October 2, 2003Applicant: Pennzoil-Quaker State CompanyInventors: I-Ching Chiu, Selda Gunsel, Paul Lacey
