Patent number: 5185637Abstract: A portable traffic signal photometer is capable of rapidly and effectively measuring the intensity of light emanating from a traffic signal light. The photometer includes a housing member with a circular front opening for engagement with the lens of a traffic signal light. The photometer is pressed against the lens, and the light emanating from the traffic signal light is directed through an optical filter located inside the housing, which permits light from the traffic signal light emanating at a predetermined downward angle to pass through it. The light from the filter is directed onto a light-sensitive device, which produces an output signal proportional to the intensity of the light emitted by the traffic signal lens.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 1991Date of Patent: February 9, 1993Assignee: Lighting Sciences, Inc.Inventors: Ian Lewin, Ladd Howell

Patent number: 4703405Abstract: A refractive lens member for use with a luminaire is constructed to minimize high angle glare. The grid comprises a plurality of lenses which are interconnected by a rib structure to form a pattern of lenses in a network grid, with the lenses all lying substantially in the same plane. Each individual lens has a flat circular light incident surface and each lens has a substantially convex, spherical section light emergent surface. The rib structure is made of the same material as the lenses and may be integrally formed with the lenses to form the network grid. The rib structure is constructed to cooperate with the lenses to which prevent light at angles outside a pre-established range arrives on the light incident side surfaces from exiting from the light emergent surfaces of said lenses.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 1986Date of Patent: October 27, 1987Inventor: Ian Lewin

Patent number: 4652851Abstract: An improved traffic signal lamp control system utilizes continuously burning lamps, such as fluorescent lamps or HID lamps, located inside a traffic signal housing or external to the housing to direct light toward the lens apertures of the housing. A light attentuation device, which may be either a mechanical shutter or a liquid crystal panel is placed in the path of light between the continuously energized lamp and the aperture of the housing to either block the passage of light from the lamp through the aperture or permit the passage of light therethrough. The conventional red, amber and green lenses are placed in the apertures, and the conventional traffic signal light control signals are used to operate the attentuation device. Substantial savings in power consumption are encountered since fluorescent lamps and HID lamps consume much less power than incandescent lamps, and considerably increased lamp life can be achieved.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1983Date of Patent: March 24, 1987Inventor: Ian Lewin

Patent number: 4575788Abstract: A luminaire for use with HID lightbulbs includes a housing having four primary identical compound curve reflector sections oriented with two sections on each side of the lamp to cause major projections of the light emanating from the luminaire diagonally of the longitudinal axis of the lamp in a horizontal plane to create a square or rectangular distribution of light on the surface to be illuminated. Auxiliary reflector sections are placed at the ends of the light bulb and interconnect the main reflector sections to create an increase in the light projected along the lamp axis to compensate for the reduction in inherent lamp intensity along its axis.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1984Date of Patent: March 11, 1986Assignee: QL, Inc.Inventor: Ian Lewin

Patent number: 4564888Abstract: A "wall-wash" lighting fixture is mounted on the ceiling along the top of a wall to be provided with a substantially uniform illumination downwardly from the fixture. An elongated fluorescent bulb is used as the source of light; and the reflector is comprised of at least a central section and two shorter end sections. The cross-section of the central section of the reflector differs from the cross-section of the end sections in a manner to cause greater amounts of light to be reflected a greater distance downwardly on the wall from the center section than from the end sections. This compensates for the non-uniform light intensity from the fluorescent bulb, and results in a more uniform illumination of the wall below the fixture.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 1984Date of Patent: January 14, 1986Assignee: Linear Lighting Corp.Inventors: Ian Lewin, Richard V. Heinisch, Arnold L. Tanunliong

Patent number: 4388675Abstract: An indirect multiple bulb fluorescent light fixture has an elongated rectangular housing with inverted V-shaped reflector members located beneath each of the bulbs and with an additional inverted V-shaped reflector member located between each pair of bulbs in the fixture. All of the interior surfaces of the fixture, including the side walls of the rectangular housing for the fixture, have specular surfaces. The angles of the V-shaped reflector members are selected to cause substantially all of the light emanating from the bulbs to be reflected out of the fixture and to minimize light reflected back into the bulbs for dispersing the light emanating from the fixture uniformly on the ceiling above the fixture without requiring translucent covers or other diffusers. This results in a significantly improved efficiency of the fixture over conventional fixtures which rely upon translucent covers to effect the desired light dispersion.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1980Date of Patent: June 14, 1983Inventor: Ian Lewin

Patent number: 4383289Abstract: A task lighting fixture is provided for concentrating illumination on a work area beneath and offset to the side of the fixture. To accomplish this, an open reflector having a specular surface is mounted above and off to one side of the area to be illuminated. Transverse parallel vertical cross sections of the fixture are identical and comprise short and long compound curves joined together to form a cusp. The long compound curve extends toward the work area on which the illumination is to be concentrated. A U-shaped fluorescent bulb has each leg parallel to the cusp and the axes of the legs each are located on lines dissecting the cusp of the reflector.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1980Date of Patent: May 10, 1983Inventor: Ian Lewin

Patent number: 4344111Abstract: A lighting unit comprising a lamp and a reflector provides high intensity, high efficiency, even illumination over an area of particular shape and size and has a cut-off angle which enables a person to approach close to the lighting unit without seeing the lamp or its reflection. The reflector comprises at least two spaced apart curved reflector surfaces which join each other along an edge line in a plane behind and spaced from the lamp. Points on the curve line of each reflector surface are spaced progressively farther away from the lamp than the edge line. Some points on the curve are located on the side of the plane remote from the lamp. The lighting unit, which may employ reflector surfaces in addition to those above mentioned, may be employed in systems wherein it projects light upwardly for downward reflection from a ceiling or projects light downwardly directly onto a work surface.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 1980Date of Patent: August 10, 1982Assignee: McGraw-Edison CompanyInventors: Alan J. Ruud, Ian Lewin

Patent number: 4310876Abstract: A lighting fixture and method using multiple reflections having a housing with an open side. A lamp is mounted in the housing and produces rays of light which pass through the open side. First and second reflecting surfaces are carried by the housing for reflecting light. The first and second reflecting surfaces are positioned on opposite sides of the lamp so that direct rays from the lamp will strike the first reflecting surface and be reflected onto the second reflecting surface and then will be reflected through the open side of the housing at a high angle with respect to the angle of the original direct rays from the lamp.Type: GrantFiled: March 17, 1980Date of Patent: January 12, 1982Inventors: Edward A. Small, Jr., Ian Lewin

Patent number: 4262326Abstract: A lighting system for providing aesthetic and energy efficient lighting, for building interiors and exterior lighting, includes lighting fixtures including a high intensity discharge lamp and a novel lens. The lens is formed as a dropped square pyramid with four triangular lower panels and four generally vertical side walls. Prisms on the inner and outer faces of the lens produce a higher luminous intensity at an angle of about 30.degree. to 50.degree. than at nadir and project light at higher angles toward the corners of the lens than perpendicular to the sides of the lens, thereby producing a generally square, widespread light distribution pattern. The lens cuts off high angle light (with respect to nadir), thereby reducing glare.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 1979Date of Patent: April 14, 1981Assignee: K-S-H, Inc.Inventor: Ian Lewin
