The 8-HQHNC is used in a method of removing heavy metals and/or salt from a solution which includes steps of contacting the solution with 8-HQHNC under conditions suitable for the adsorption of the heavy metals and/or salt to the 8-HQHNC and recovering the 8-HQHNC from the solution.
