  • Patent number: 5259059
Abstract: An optical fiber containing intrinsic alignment features is disclosed. The fiber comprises a core, cladding layer, cladding insert or inserts, and a jacket. The outer shape of the tip of a fiber can be altered by etching away the jacket and cladding insert or inserts. The respective solubilities of the cladding insert and the cladding layer in etchants are selected to provide control of the resulting fiber shape upon completion of etching.

  • Patent number: 5197762
Abstract: A filing device comprising suspension bar (60) with hooked end sections (64) is disclosed whereby the bar enables suspension of a booklet (70) from suspension rails (68) of a hanging-type filing system. A booklet essentially straddles the bar and can be attached to it permanently or semi-permanently. Single sheet documents can be also attached to the bar with an adhesive strip (62). Variations of the bar include ones with movable hook sections: pivotable (84), slidable (120), and hinged (130). Retainers are provided to releasably secure the hook sections in deployed and stowed positions. In two of its variations, the bar (160) can be permanently installed inside a booklet during binding operation, to become its integral part.

  • Patent number: 5156688
Abstract: A new and improved semiconductor thermoelectric device which could be used either as a thermoelectric cooler or as a thermopile heat sensor with high output voltage. This invention comprises an array of thermocouples fabricated on a semiconductor substrate. The thermocouples comprise segments of tantalum and segments of conductively doped polysilicon as two electric conductor materials of different thermoelectric properties which are buried between two layers of oxide. A layer of metal as a heat collector covers the surface of the thermopile and distributes heat from a nearby heat source.

  • Patent number: 5150371
Abstract: A new and improved flip chip combination of a laser diode chip and a carrier chip with built-in thermoelectric cooler. This invention comprises an array of laser stripes, each having a separate cooling strip bonded to it. Each cooling strip could be controlled either separately or by a common source, permitting cooling of each laser stripe at a different rate or at the same rate respectively, to thereby maintain the laser stripes at the same or different operating temperatures.

  • Patent number: 4780732
Abstract: This invention relates to electro-optic line printers and, more particularly to dual region TIR (total internal reflection) modulators. An electro-optical modulator is disclosed wherein the driving electrodes are implemented in two offset, but connected, sections to effectively double the output resolution of the modulator. Longitudinally displaced, laterally staggered electrode arrays are used to produce the laterally staggered fringe field patterns. Since the impinging light beam will defocus while being deflected, means are provided to focus the beam into first and second interaction regions being addressed.
