  • Patent number: 8545035
Abstract: The color patterned front light (CPFL) may be implemented by shining light through a side of a CPFL panel that is situated adjacent to and in front of a monochromic reflective display (MRD). The CPFL may direct one of red, green, blue, or white light through a rear surface of the panel and onto each of the pixels in the MRD. The pixels may be grouped in blocks, such as n-by-m or n-by-n blocks of pixels. The pixels in the block may be selectively activated by the MRD to either absorb the light or reflect the light shone on the respective pixel. By adjusting the representation of the pixels in the MRD, the block may appear to change color based on the colored light from the CPFL that is reflected outward from the display.

  • Publication number: 20130135215
Abstract: Techniques for implementing incremental page transitions on an electronic paper display of an electronic device are described herein. In some instances, an electronic-paper display controller that allows for per-pixel or multiple-pixel-block updating enables the incremental page transitions.

  • Patent number: 8416365
Abstract: A diffusive display, such as a polymer network liquid crystal display (PNLCD) and a visible wavelength light polarizer are combined to form a diffusive display device. The diffusive display device may provide black and white or color presentation with refresh rates suitable for playback of animation or full motion video using ambient or emitted light. By altering a state of the diffusive material, such as polymer network liquid crystals, between a scatter state and a clear state an image may be generated.

  • Publication number: 20130009907
Abstract: A stylus comprising a magnetic field source when combined with a touch sensor provides for several input modes for an electronic device. Magnetometers in the electronic device may detect the presence, location, orientation, and angle of the magnet and thus the stylus. Presence of the magnetic field in conjunction with touches on the force sensitive touch sensor provides additional comparisons to distinguish whether a touch is from a human hand, a particular portion of a stylus, or other object.

  • Patent number: 7984544
Abstract: A force or pressure sensor and appertaining method for manufacturing are provided in which the sensor comprises a repeating conductive trace pattern that can be replicated to produce a consistent conductive trace across more than one adjacent pattern section forming an electrical bus, wherein more than one section of a series of conductive traces are printed on a thin and flexible dielectric backing using the pattern. The thin and flexible dielectric backing has a repeated pattern of conductive traces printed above the dielectric backing and one or more dielectric layers provided above the conductive traces, the dielectric layers having access regions permitting contact of conductors above the one or more dielectric layers, and a sensor conductor layer printed above the one or more dielectric layers that contacts the conductive traces via at least one of the access regions or regions not covered by the one or more dielectric layers.

  • Publication number: 20090143174
Abstract: A system and appertaining method are described to detect whether a projectile impact occurs on one side of a boundary line or the other The system utilizes force sensing resistor-based sensors that may be configured in sections or groups and connected to a control system with a display. Sensor installation methods for the sensors and associated electronics are also provided. An impact classification system is provided for distinguishing between various events, including a footstep, ball impact and tennis racquet contact. A sensor monitoring system is provided for determining the health of sensors and providing an error indication if sensor problems exist. A service detection system is provided when the system is used for tennis that permits activation of selected groups of sensors and deactivation of others.
