  • Publication number: 20150267630
Abstract: An arrangement in a vehicle engine includes an intake air manifold, an exhaust gas manifold and a plurality of cylinders, and is adapted for being operated by a dual fuel including diesel and gas fuel. The arrangement further includes an exhaust gas recirculation line connecting the exhaust gas manifold with the intake, air manifold, an exhaust gas recirculation valve arranged in the exhaust gas recirculation line, and a control unit arranged for controlling the operation of the exhaust gas recirculation valve. The arrangement further includes a knock sensor arranged on the engine and connected to the control unit; the control unit being adapted for opening the exhaust gas recirculation valve in the event that knock is detected by the knock sensor. The arrangement can permit a dual fuel engine to be used with methane gas having a wide variety of methane numbers without causing the engine to knock.

  • Patent number: 8849546
Abstract: A method of selecting between two operation modes in a dual fuel internal combustion engine of the diesel-type is provided. The engine includes a combustion chamber at least partly delimited by a piston, a first fuel supply for a first fuel, the first fuel supply being located in or at the combustion chamber and/or in or at an inlet port thereof, and a second fuel supply for a second fuel. The engine has two different operation modes, both operation modes including the steps of pre-mixing the first fuel in the combustion chamber and/or in the inlet port, compressing the charge containing the first fuel to conditions that allow auto-ignition of the second fuel, performing a first injection of the second fuel into the combustion chamber to initiate auto-ignition of the second fuel, thereby initiating conditions for combustion of the fuel remaining in the combustion chamber after auto-ignition of the second fuel.

The method includes pre-mixing a first fuel in a combustion chamber and/or in an inlet port, compressing a charge containing the first fuel to conditions that allow auto-ignition of a second fuel, performing a first injection of the second fuel into the combustion chamber to initiate auto-ignition of the second fuel for igniting the first fuel, thereby initiating conditions for pre-mixed flame propagation combustion of the first fuel. At least one subsequent injection is performed in which additional kinetic energy is supplied into the combustion process to thereby enhance turbulence intensity and propagation speed of the flame and/or enhance late mixing in the combustion chamber, so a to improve late oxidation during combustion. A dual fuel combustion engine of the diesel engine type.

  • Patent number: 6820587
Abstract: Process which, by spray-controlled, directly injected combustion with the aid of step-by-step technical development of the whole of the combustion system, achieves an intensified mixing process during injection and after-burning, which speeds up soot oxidation during various stages so effectively that the engine can be run with sufficiently high EGR content for desired NOx and soot content down to ultra-low emissions, at the same time as parameters which control the efficiency are decoupled from measures for desired emission level, thereby enabling optimum efficiency to be attained for the process.
