Patent number: 4809778Abstract: An oil well tool for in situ release of treatment fluid into an oil well is disclosed. A tubular body is insertable into an oil well casing, which tubular body carries a bladder containing treatment fluid. The body is closed at a lower end and has at an upper end a fishing neck connector. A weight slideable within the tubular body compresses the treatment fluid within the bladder and forces the treatment fluid under a constant pressure through a fluid passageway. The size and length of the fluid passageway, combined with the pressure applied and viscosity of the treatment fluid, dictate the flow rate at which the treatment fluid is deposited into the oil well. The treatment fluid mixes with other fluids being circulated through the well formation. The primary purpose for the treatment fluid is to inhibit scale buildup and corrosion. This is accomplished by slow release of the treatment fluid over an extended period of time.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 1987Date of Patent: March 7, 1989Assignee: Marathon Oil CompanyInventor: Irvin D. Patent number: 4790386Abstract: Treatment composition is released into a well by lowering a container filled with the composition to the bottom of the well. The corrosive well fluid dissolves the composition through the open upper end of the container and corrodes away the walls of the container from the inside out. The outer surface of the container walls is coated with a material, such as tetrafluoroethylene, which acts as a barrier to the well fluid to prevent it from directly contacting the outer wall surface. In this manner treatment composition is gradually released from the top end of the ever-diminishing length of container and the container is degraded in the well.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 1988Date of Patent: December 13, 1988Assignee: Marathon Oil CompanyInventors: Irvin D. Patent number: 4644263Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring the amount of fluids in a two-fluid mixture flowing in a conduit wherein the fluids have different electrical conductivities. The apparatus includes a predetermined grid pattern of a first plurarlity of horizontal and a second plurality of vertical wires all under tension wherein the vertical wires are spaced a predetermined distance from the horizontal wires. When the lower conductivity fluid, such as water, occupies the predetermined space at the intersection of a vertical and horizontal wire, an electrical signal is generated. The electrical signals generated from each predetermined spacing having the lower conductivity fluid there between are counted and the percentage concentration of the lower conductivity fluid in the higher conductivity fluid is determined for each time interval.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 1984Date of Patent: February 17, 1987Assignee: Marathon Oil CompanyInventor: Irvin D. Patent number: 4581927Abstract: The invention provides a system and method for measuring fluid velocity in well bores. The system and method includes the provision of a plurality of spaced magnetic markers (70) located at predetermined distances (d) along a line (40), a weight (100) connected to one end of the line (40) for holding the line at the bottom of the bore hole, and a basket (110) engaging the line for carrying a self-contained and sealed electronics package (90). When the basket (110) is selectively opened after a predetermined period of time, it flows upwardly at the rate of the fluid carrying the electronics package (90). A sensor (400) in the electronics package (90) detects the position of each magnetic marker (70) on the line (40) and the time elapsed between the detection of each successive markers (70) stored in memory.Type: GrantFiled: December 26, 1984Date of Patent: April 15, 1986Assignee: Marathon Oil CompanyInventor: Irvin D. Patent number: 4576042Abstract: A flow basket for use in an apparatus for measuring flow rates having a plurality of substantially triangular shaped petals that selectively open and close about a shaft. A plurality of support bows extend over the petals and attach to the opening end of each petal wherein the support bows are further interconnected to the shaft so that the support bows open and close the petals only in an outward radial direction.Type: GrantFiled: December 26, 1984Date of Patent: March 18, 1986Assignee: Marathon Oil CompanyInventor: Irvin D. Patent number: 4404843Abstract: The invention provides a system for the detection of leaks in the primary barrier (150), the secondary barrier (130), and the inner hull (110) of the primary and secondary insulation spaces (140 and 120) of a cryogenic cargo tank (10) carrying liquified natural gas in a transport ship (20) wherein an inert gas is maintained at a first predetermined pressure (P.sub.NP) in the primary insulation space (140) which is less than the pressure of the cargo gas (P.sub.CH.sbsb.2) and wherein the inert gas is maintained at a second predetermined pressure (P.sub.NS) in the secondary insulation space (120) so that the second predetermined pressure (P.sub.S) is less than the first predetermined pressure (P.sub.NP) and is also less than atmospheric pressure (P.sub.O). A gas sensor (930) is placed in the primary insulation space (140) to detect any leaks in the primary barrier (150) and a sensor (940) is placed in the secondary insulation space (120) to detect the presence of any oxygen due to a leak in the hull (110).Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 1981Date of Patent: September 20, 1983Assignee: Marathon Oil CompanyInventors: Irvin D. Patent number: 4390836Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for detecting and locating holidays in an insulating coating of a subterranean pipeline. An alternating current is induced in the portion of the pipeline being surveyed. The pipeline is tracked by sensing the normal electromagnetic field generated by the current flowing in the pipeline. Leakage current indicative of the location and magnitude of a holiday in the pipeline coating is sensed by a pair of coil members adapted to be located above the ground on opposite sides of a vertical plane including the longitudinal axis of the pipeline with the central axes of the coil members being oriented generally parallel to the central axis of the pipeline, whereby an electrical current signal is induced in the pair of coil members by an electromagnetic field generated by the leakage current. The electrical current signal is displayed to provide an indication of the location and magnitude of the holiday.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 1980Date of Patent: June 28, 1983Assignee: Marathon Oil CompanyInventors: Charles R. Bruce, Irvin D. Johnson

Patent number: 4314476Abstract: The invention provides a system and method measuring high and low fluid velocity in well bores and particularly for fluids exhibiting stirring action. The system and method (300) includes a restrictor (310) inserted into the bore hole (10) at a desired depth which minimizes stirring action (40) and impedes the upward flow of the fluids and a sensor (320) measuring any difference in fluid pressure above and below the restrictor. The restrictor (310) is pulled upwardly by cable (340) connected to powered reel (430 and 440) at a velocity sufficient to maintain the differential pressure (.DELTA.P) across the restrictor (310) at zero. When the differential pressure (.DELTA.P) is zero, the velocity at which the restrictor (310) moves upwardly in the bore hole (10) is equal to the velocity of the fluids in the vicinity of the restrictor (310). The velocity of the pulled cable (340) can be sensed and recorded as the velocity of the multi-phase fluids.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 1980Date of Patent: February 9, 1982Assignee: Marathon Oil CompanyInventor: Irvin D. Apparatus and method for controlling the rate of feeding a petroleum product to a coking drum system
Patent number: 4176052Abstract: A coking drum system is provided in combination with a process control unit wherein the rate of material delivered to a coking drum during a coking process timing cycle is monitored and the quantity of material received by the coking drum is continuously derived therefrom. Based on this derived quantity of delivered material, the quantity of feed material required to fill the drum to a preestablished level with coke, at the completion of the timing cycle, can be predicted. The flow rate of feed material to the coking drum is accordingly adjusted so that the amount of coke produced in the drum during one timing cycle is optimized.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 1978Date of Patent: November 27, 1979Assignee: Marathon Oil CompanyInventors: Charles R.
