  • Patent number: 4792464
Abstract: There is disclosed a water-base coating composition and method for its use that forms a readily strippable protective film on metal surfaces. The composition includes a film former ingredient which is a terpolymer of polyvinyl butyral, polyvinyl alcohol and polyvinyl acetate. The water-base coating composition also contains a fugitive corrosion inhibitor, i.e., a corrosion inhibitor having a sufficient vapor pressure to impart corrosion resistance to surfaces coated with the film former composition. Suitable corrosion inhibitors are aromatic triazoles such as benzotriazole. A leveling agent such as morpholine is used to prevent the film from pulling from the edges during drying. Morpholine is particularly advantageous as it extends the working time when coating objects, and prevents the dispersion from clogging nozzles of spraying equipment. Morpholine also contributes to the corrosion inhibition of the coating.

  • Patent number: 4584175
Abstract: There is disclosed a method for the inhibiting of corrosion of a variety of metals by placing the metal in the presence of a plastic sheet carrier having incorporated therein effective amounts of corrosion inhibitors which include; (a) certain hydroxyalkyl fatty amines, and (b) certain fatty imidazolinium quaternary compounds. The aforementioned compounds provide remarkable corrosion protection for ferrous metals. There can be also included in the plastic certain benzotriazoles or tolyltriazoles when it is desired to extend the protection to copper and copper base alloys, and to aluminum and aluminum base alloys. When protection is also desired for magnesium and magnesium alloys with other metals such as aluminum, there can also be included in the plastic sheet carrier an organic phosphate adduct with diethyl amine. In the preferred embodiment, the metal objects to be protected are sealed in an envelope formed of the plastic sheet material.

  • Patent number: 4448916
Abstract: There is disclosed a liquid gel composition useful for incorporation in thermoplastic and thermosetting resins. The liquid gel comprises a liquid mixture of certain hydroxyalkyl fatty amines or fatty imidazolium quaternaries which is gelled by an organophilic, expanding lattice clay that is ion exchanged with alkyl ammonium ions. The clay is employed at a sufficient concentration to form a stable gel and is milled into the liquid vehicle to form a gel of a suitable viscosity to permit it to be added to the resin with metering injection equipment. The composition when used at low concentrations in resins enhances the physical properties of the resins by imparting a permanent anti-static characteristic to the resins and by significantly decreasing their brittleness, thereby increasing elongation, impact and tensile strengths of the resins.

  • Patent number: 4444714
Abstract: There is disclosed a stable liquid gel of colorants useful for incorporation in thermoplastic and thermosetting resins. The liquid gel comprises a liquid vehicle which is a plasticizer for the resins and which is gelled by an organophilic, expanding lattice clay which is ion exchanged with alkyl ammonium ions. Preferably the gel is modified by the addition of certain hydroxyalkyl fatty amines or fatty imidazolium quaternaries. The clay is employed at a sufficient concentration to form a stable gel and is milled into the liquid vehicle to form a pre-gel of substantially lesser than the final, desired viscosity. Solid, subdivided colorants are blended into the pre-gel at a concentration from 10 to about 70 weight percent and the resultant mixture is milled to the final desired viscosity.
