  • Patent number: 4396737
Abstract: Disclosed is a liquid composition of a polyol(allyl carbonate) monomer; a first, low initiation temperature, short half life, polymerization initiator; and, a second, high initiation temperature, long half life, polymerization initiator. Optionally, a photochromic agent may be present. Also disclosed is a method of polymerizing the composition, and the polymerizate prepared thereby.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 19, 1981
Date of Patent: August 2, 1983
    Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.
    Inventor: Ivan R. Leatherman
  • Patent number: 4368310
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of polymerizing a monomer by forming a film or pool of monomer atop an immiscible liquid and initiating the polymerization. In this way there is obtained a thin sheet of polymers substantially free of imperfections on the surface thereof in contact with the liquid. According to a further exemplification a second, less dense, but also immiscible liquid is established above the monomer whereby to form a second smooth surface.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 23, 1981
Date of Patent: January 11, 1983
    Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.
    Inventor: Ivan R. Leatherman
  • Patent number: 4297267
Abstract: Disclosed is a liquid composition of diol bis (allyl carbonate) monomer and hexavalent chromium which may be polymerized by the addition of a polymerization initiating amount of an organic peroxide free radical polymerization initiator to yield a solid, green polymerizate having dispersed therethrough the reaction products of the diol bis (allyl carbonate) monomer, hexavalent chromium, and the organic peroxy free radical initiator.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 4, 1980
Date of Patent: October 27, 1981
    Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.
    Inventor: Ivan R. Leatherman
  • Patent number: 4273702
Abstract: Disclosed is a liquid composition of a diol bis (allyl carbonate) monomer and cobalt aluminate where the cobalt aluminate is preferably finely divided and prepared by calcining cobalt oxide and aluminum hydroxide. Also disclosed is a method of polymerizing the liquid composition whereby to obtain a solid blue polymerizate having dispersed therethrough the reaction products of the diol bis (allyl carbonate) and the organic peroxy free radical initiator.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 4, 1980
Date of Patent: June 16, 1981
    Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.
    Inventor: Ivan R. Leatherman
  • Patent number: 4181626
Abstract: Disclosed are light absorbing solutions of tungsten hexacarbonyl in olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acids and light absorbing polymers prepared from allyl carbonate, olefinically unsaturated acid monomers, and tungsten hexacarbonyl. Also disclosed is a process for preparing such light absorbing polymers.
