Patent number: 8437757Abstract: Improved systems and methods for establishing peer-to-peer calls such as voice over IP calls and video over IP calls. In various embodiments of the invention, SMTP messages are exchanged between devices using a SMTP server, with the SMTP messages including IP address information. With this arrangement, the need for SIP service providers can be eliminated. In other embodiments of the present invention, SMS messages including IP address information are transmitted between devices during a GSM or other type of telephone call, enabling the call to “migrate” to a VoIP or video over IP call.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2006Date of Patent: May 7, 2013Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventors: Manish Varma, Sami Makelainen, Ville Aarni, Tommy Lindgren, Teemu Harju, Matti Vesterinen, Javier Lafuente, Jaakko Teinila, Harri Hakulinen, Heikki Kokkinen

Patent number: 8316088Abstract: This invention describes a method for sharing of application specific objects between communication devices (e.g., a mobile communication device or a mobile phone) using middleware containing a peer-to-peer engine. This engine is completely peer-to-peer based and no servers are needed in the network. Especially games are seen as a promising potential application for the invention. An application registers to the peer-to-peer (P2P) engine when it wants to share or download files. The P2P engine takes care of the file sharing and informs when a new file has been downloaded so the application can start using it and the P2P engine delivers them to the appropriate application directories. The P2P engine can use either a 2G or 3G general packet radio system (GPRS), a wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) or a Bluetooth as a transport for the file sharing and the choice of the transport is left to the user.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 2004Date of Patent: November 20, 2012Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventors: Teemu Jalava, Jaakko Teinilä

Patent number: 7529929Abstract: A system and method for enforcing digital rights management (DRM) rules in a terminal, even when the requesting rendering application is already operating. Content, which may be encrypted, is received at the terminal and securely stored. On-demand authorization is effected for the rendering application that is requesting access to the content, using secure communications between a DRM engine within the terminal and an operating system within the terminal that is augmented with a security manager adapted to engage in such secure communications. If the rendering application is found to be authorized, the DRM rules are applied to determine whether the rendering application may access the content, and if so, the content is made available to the rendering application.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 2002Date of Patent: May 5, 2009Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventors: Nadarajah Asokan, Jan-Erik Ekberg, Jorma Stenman, Jaakko Teinila

Publication number: 20090075642Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and devices for peer-to-peer connectivity in cellular networks and especially to relayed peer-to-peer communications between mobile terminals operable in public land mobile networks (PLMN). In brief summary, the inventive concept teaches an implementation of a quasi peer-to-peer communication between a plurality of mobile terminals via a data relay service network entity, which is responsible for replicating data received from one mobile terminal participating in the peer-to-peer communication to all other mobile terminals participating therein. The inventive concept teaches moreover advantages concepts in establishing the peer-to-peer communication employing an adapted protocol framework and in operating such a data relay service as a generic data relay service for relaying arbitrary data contents.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 27, 2003Publication date: March 19, 2009Inventors: Olli Rantapuska, Jaakko Teinila

Publication number: 20060218282Abstract: A system and method for providing mobile assisted, fixed line communication. A device connectable to a mobile network coordinates with a session gateway device that is connected to a fixed line network in order to establish a connection to another gateway device. Signaling over a cellular or other non-fixed line network is used to establish connection parameters relating to a fixed line session. The established connection parameters are transmitted to the respective session gateway devices. Based upon these parameters, the session gateway devices can directly communicate with each other over the Internet or other fixed line network.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 23, 2005Publication date: September 28, 2006Inventors: Jaakko Teinila, Jari Selin, Mikko Lonnfors, Kai Vehmanen

Patent number: 7099339Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, forms an integrated packet radio communication system. An integrated system is formed of portions of a GPRS system as well as portions of a WLAN system, such as that defined in the IEEE 802.11 standard. A WIP (WLAN Integrated Protocol) layer is defined, functionally positioned between upper-level, GPRS layers and lower-level, WLAN layers. Advantages of a GPRS system as well as advantages of the WLAN system are maintained in the integrated system.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 2000Date of Patent: August 29, 2006Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventors: Jianhua Wang, Arto Karppanen, Marko Suoknuuti, Jaakko Teinilä, Jan-Erik Ekberg

Publication number: 20050266798Abstract: A system, apparatus and method for relating a security association to a contact in a namespace familiar to the user, and using this association to make access control decisions. An identifier of a first device is received at a second device. Using the identifier, the second device locates a contact entry corresponding to the identifier in a contact directory. A contact name associated with the identified contact entry is presented to the user of the second device to facilitate user authorization of the wireless proximity connection. An authorization identifier, e.g., a Bluetooth link key, is associated with the contact entry if authorized by the user of the second device. A wireless proximity connection, e.g., a Bluetooth connection, is established between the first and second devices in response to associating the authorization identifier with the entry. When subsequent wireless proximity connection are attempted between the first and second devices, the connection may be automatically established.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 31, 2004Publication date: December 1, 2005Inventors: Seamus Moloney, Jaakko Teinila, Nadarajah Asokan, Pasi Eronen

Publication number: 20050002382Abstract: A communication system comprising a data communication network, a service provider and a communication terminal is described. The communication terminal includes a user interaction device, a processor, a memory and a character stored in the memory and capable of running on the processor and of providing a presence on the user interaction device. The communication system also comprises an agent residing in the data communication network being configurable to collect data from the service provider, of providing a continuous follow-up of occurrences in the network and of providing the data to the character. The character is configurable to approach the agent and to receive the data from the agent over a wireless link supported by the communication terminal and to present the data to the user by means of the user interaction device. Furthermore, a method for data transfer from a service provider to a communication terminal over a data communication network is described.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 29, 2004Publication date: January 6, 2005Inventors: Jyri Salomaa, Pekka Lahtinen, Pekka Laitinen, Olli Rantapuska, Juha Saarnio, Jaakko Teinila

Publication number: 20040186918Abstract: A method and apparatus for dispatching incoming application data on a computing device is disclosed. A dispatcher can determine a correct destination application for an incoming application data based on a registry and an application descriptor in the incoming data. In one arrangement, the dispatcher can be included as part of the Java Mobile Device Information Profile PushRegistry framework for handling incoming network connections. The dispatcher can be used in a multiple protocol environment, as well be used by multiple applications utilizing the same protocols.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 21, 2003Publication date: September 23, 2004Inventors: Mikko Aleksi Lonnfors, Jaakko Teinila, Jose Costa-Requena, Jukka Immonen, Inmaculada Espigares
