    Abstract: An automated clinical analyzer comprises an upper carousel operable to rotate about a central axis and a lower carousel operable to rotate about the same central axis. The upper carousel includes a first plurality of seats operable to receive a first plurality of reagent cartridges. The lower carousel includes a second plurality of seats operable to receive a second plurality of reagent cartridges. The analyzer further comprises a reagent probe assembly including a probe tip. The reagent probe assembly is operable to move the probe tip between the upper carousel and the lower carousel and extract liquid reagents from the first plurality of reagent cartridges and the second plurality of reagent cartridges. The upper carousel includes an opening that allows the probe to extend through the opening and reach cartridges located on the lower carousel.

    Abstract: An analytical biochemistry system featuring a substrate with reactants immobilized thereon at fixed, known locations, a holder supporting the substrate and a manipulator for transporting the holder to a fixed sample and to an inspection station. The reactants are binding agents for a target biomolecule in a sample which forms a bound substance having a detectable characteristic. The holder may be a standard pipettor, optionally carried by a robot arm or hand as the manipulator to contact the sample for detection of the presence of target biomolecules within the sample. In one embodiment, the holder is a pipette tip within which the substrate is housed, or it may be a pipette adapter which bears the substrate and fits within the sample wells of a standard microtiter plate.

The method includes the steps of positioning of an optical probe near the primary collection tube and monitoring the neat serum sample in the primary collection tube to determine whether an interferant, such as hemolysis, icteris and lipemia are present in the serum sample. From this test, a hemolytic index, an icteric index and a lipemic index can also be established for the neat serum sample. Based upon these serum indices, the neat serum sample can be transferred to a clinical analyzer for additional testing or to waste receptacle because the sample is compromised. Additionally, a volume test can be performed on the serum sample in the primary collection tube so that the serum sample can be properly allocated during subsequent testing.
