Patent number: 8798243Abstract: A customer premises equipment (CPE) device, such as a telephone, connected to a local communications line existing on the premises is capable of receiving incoming telephone or like communication calls. The device has an interface which connects the device to the local communications line on the premises and enables the device to receive an alternating voltage analog ring signal corresponding to a notification of an incoming telephone call. The device also includes a demodulator for decoding and processing the ring signal including additional media data which is of low amplitude relative to that of the alternating voltage analog ring signal and which is modulated on the alternating voltage analog ring signal. Further, the device includes an input/output (I/O) component providing a means for audible and/or visual output of media from the device. The media output from the device directly corresponds to the media data modulated on the ring signal. CPE telephone systems and methods are also provided.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 2009Date of Patent: August 5, 2014Assignee: Motorola Mobility LLCInventors: Christopher J. Cotignola, Jacob Igval, Dipak R. Patel

Patent number: 8718668Abstract: A device comprises an analog signal port, a data packet port, and a control processor comprising circuitry to convert analog audio signals into the data packets and vice versa. The device further comprises an access control module to register network access locations and determine a perimeter within which the accessed location is located when the device is accessing the network. By using the perimeter, the access control module is to receive from a user of the device a verification or a manual entry of a location within the perimeter as the accessed location. The access control module is to determine the received one of the verified location and the manually entered location as the accessed location and provide the determined accessed location to a location-based service through the data packet port.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 2008Date of Patent: May 6, 2014Assignee: Motorola Mobility LLCInventor: Jacob Igval

Publication number: 20110103370Abstract: A hung call system includes a memory storing samples of voice data from packets for a VoIP call. A voice activity detector detects whether the stored voice data includes a voice from one or more parties to the call. A processing circuit determines whether the voice activity detector detects the voice, and the processing circuit facilitates release of the call if the voice activity detector does not detect the voice for a predetermined period of time.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 29, 2009Publication date: May 5, 2011Applicant: General Instruments CorporationInventors: Jacob Igval, Christopher J. Cotignola

Patent number: 7889721Abstract: A device selects a mode and communicates data based on the selected mode. The device comprises at least one interface circuit configured to monitor analog audio signals from a customer premise equipment device and a processor circuit. The processor circuit assigns a first band mode for converting the analog audio signals to data packets if the analog audio signals do not have frequency components outside the first band of frequencies and assigns a second band mode for the conversion otherwise. The assignment of the second band mode for the conversion enables the output circuit to use a larger bandwidth of the communication channel to a network.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 2008Date of Patent: February 15, 2011Assignee: General Instrument CorporationInventors: Jacob Igval, Christopher J. Publication number: 20090154670Abstract: An incoming call is received. Prior to transmitting a first ringing signal for the incoming call, an advanced calling feature signal is transmitted to customer premises equipment (CPE) on a local line at the customer premises. Then, the first ringing signal is transmitted to the CPE via the local line.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 14, 2007Publication date: June 18, 2009Applicant: GENERAL INSTRUMENT CORPORATIONInventors: Christopher Cotignola, Jacob Igval, Dipak Patel

Publication number: 20090109969Abstract: A multi-media terminal adapter includes a narrowband SLIC and a wideband SLIC. A DSP circuit is configured to encode a VoIP data stream and to transmit the encoded VoIP data stream to the wideband SLIC or the narrowband SLIC. A processor determines whether the VoIP data stream includes narrowband audio data or wideband audio data, and instructs the DSP circuit to transmit the encoded VoIP data stream to the wideband SLIC or the narrowband SLIC depending on whether the received VoIP data stream includes narrowband audio data or wideband audio data.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 31, 2007Publication date: April 30, 2009Applicant: GENERAL INSTRUMENT CORPORATIONInventors: Christopher J. Publication number: 20080254762Abstract: Embodiments of the invention generally provide a method and apparatus for call protection over a telephone system. One embodiment of a method for protecting a telephone call between a first user and a second user includes receiving a request from the first user to protect the telephone call, monitoring wireless communications between a telephone base and a first handset in use by the first user for the presence of a third user, where the third user is attempting to communicate with the telephone base using a second handset after the request for protection has been made, and blocking communications between the second handset and the telephone base.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 13, 2007Publication date: October 16, 2008Applicant: GENERAL INSTRUMENT CORPORATIONInventor: Jacob Igval
