  • Patent number: 11493800
Abstract: Ghost image formation due to reflections of image light by a display panel to an ocular lens may be suppressed by ensuring that the image light reflected by the lens does not get reflected by the display panel back towards the lens. To that end, the display panel may include a quarter-wave birefringent layer between the top polarizer of the display panel and a layer inside the display panel that the image light reflects from, such as a black grid layer or an active matrix layer.

  • Patent number: 11467332
Abstract: A display device includes a waveguide, an array of tunable retarders in contact with the waveguide, and a polarization selective optical element. A respective tunable retarder of the array of tunable retarders receives light from the waveguide. The respective tunable retarder has a first state, which causes the respective tunable retarder to direct light having a first polarization in a first direction and a second state, which causes the respective tunable retarder to direct light having a second polarization that is distinct from the second polarization in the first direction. The polarization selective optical element is located adjacent to the array of tunable retarders so that the light having the second polarization propagates from the polarization selective optical element in a second direction and the light having the second polarization propagates from the polarization selective optical element in a third direction distinct from the second direction.

  • Publication number: 20220299754
Abstract: Unwanted reflections in a polarization diversity based optical beam scanner of a projector display may be reduced by mounting a quarter-wave plate optically in contact with the scanning mirror. This lowers the amplitude of the reflection from a rear surface of the quarter-wave plate. A residual reflection from the quarter-wave plate to mirror interface will be scanned with the main scanned light beam, reducing brightness and noticeability of image artifacts caused by undesired or spurious reflections in the optical beam scanner.

The optical assembly is configured to receive first light, having the first polarization, and reflect the first light at the reflector and at the VBG before the first light is output from the optical assembly. The optical assembly is configured to receive second light, having the second polarization, and output the second light from the optical assembly without undergoing reflection at either the reflector or the VBG.

  • Patent number: 11442272
Abstract: Various embodiments set forth high-resolution liquid crystal displays and components thereof. In some embodiments, light emitted by a high-resolution green color liquid crystal display is combined, via a combiner, with light emitted by at least one lower-resolution red and blue color liquid crystal display. The red and blue color display(s) may include a single display or two displays positioned on opposing sides of the combiner. The combiner may be a dichroic or polarization-based combiner. Combined light from the green color display and the red and blue color display(s) is passed through collimating optics, such as a pancake lens or a Fresnel lens, toward a viewer's eye.
