  • Publication number: 20060075509
Abstract: The present invention involves a networked device that protects electronically stored data in case of impact, fire, flood, or other damaging condition. The invention includes a hard disk drive enclosed within a waterproof enclosure that is encapsulated within a fire resistant ceramic box. A vent assembly is used to cool the disk drive, and insulation including phase change materials is used to maintain the internal temperature of the drive during normal operation and fire conditions. In addition, a second drive which is user removable is provided (the removable hard disk drive) that is used to mirror the data stored in the sealed drive. The two drives are configured in RAID1 configuration providing redundancy and protection against data corruption. The invention utilizes electronic sensors to detect potential damaging conditions, and upon such detection, power to the device is disconnected and software automatically causes an alarm message to be displayed at a host computer.

  • Publication number: 20040064631
Abstract: The present invention relates to an enclosure that protects an operational data storage device (preferably a common disk data storage devices with an IDE interface) from fire, flood or other hazards. The preferred embodiment comprises an enclosure which is water resistant and heat transfer protected to preserve the disk data storage device in the event of disaster involving flood or fire. Insulation, including phase change materials, are used to maintain internal temperature during normal operation and during fire conditions, so as to meet the thermal test portion of UL 72, Class 125, one hour, and the disk data storage device temperature does not exceed 125° C. The enclosure of the preferred embodiment manages humidity to an internal RH at 80% or below.

  • Publication number: 20020134837
Abstract: A magnetic head assembly includes a magnetic head and a chip including an amplifier. The magnetic head and chip may be mounted on a multi-chip module substrate and packaged in a mechanical enclosure to form a single module. The chip of the magnetic head assembly may include a microcontroller with electronic circuitry for processing the information from a magnetic stripe and transmitting the information to a host. The microcontroller may further include electronic circuitry for interfacing with and processing information from a smart card. This compact module can electronically exchange information contained in a magnetic stripe and/or smart card. A web-based depository for storing and business card information and creating electronic business cards is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5605473
Abstract: A cable connector, particularly for use in a PC that includes a monitor and a motherboard in a single unit, has a decorative outer cover or shell and a plug at its inner end adapted to be connected to a video socket on the motherboard. Wires in the interior of the connector are connected to the plug and are turned through an angle of 180.degree. to make connection with one end of a cable, the other end of which terminates in a plug for connection to the internal video monitor. The cable is able to pass directly into the chassis and under the motherboard for connection to the monitor such that only the decorative connector outer cover is visible at the external portion of the PC.
