    Abstract: A phased array antenna is made up of linear arrays. Each of the linear arrays has a printed circuit board spine. Split waveguides are formed from two symmetrical portions conductively joined to ground on opposite sides of the printed circuit board spine. Planar transmission line-to-waveguide transitions are mounted on the printed circuit board spine within the split waveguides. Phase shifter/TTD devices are mounted on the circuit board spine within the split waveguides for steering the phased array antenna beam. Bias and control circuitry is etched on the circuit board spine for biasing and controlling the phase shifter/TTD devices. The phased array antenna may be made up of the linear arrays combined into a two-dimensional array and fed with a waveguide feed or a printed feed manifold attached to the printed wiring board spine.

    Abstract: An electronically scanned slotted waveguide antenna radiates an RF signal as a scannable beam. The antenna has radiation waveguides positioned in an array. Radiation slots in the radiation waveguides radiate the scannable beam. A feed waveguide is coupled to the radiation waveguides. The feed waveguide feeds the RF signal to the radiation waveguides through coupling slots. The feed waveguide has sidewalls with tunable electromagnetic crystal (EMXT) structures thereon. The EMXT structures vary the phase of the RF signal in the feed waveguide to scan the radiated beam in one dimension. The radiation waveguides may also have tunable EMXT structures on the sidewalls to vary the phase of the RF signal to scan the radiated beam in a second dimension. The EMXT structures may be discrete EMXT devices or a EMXT material layer covering the feed and radiation waveguide sidewalls.

    Abstract: A phased array antenna with an egg crate array structure is formed from metallic row slats that form a floor and ceiling of each array element. Column slats with slots engage the row slots to form the egg crate array structure. EMXT devices are located on the column slats such that a pair of EMXT devices form array element walls. The column slats are formed from U-shaped column strips configured such that a left side of the U-shape forms a left-hand side of each array element in a column and a right side of the U forms an opposing right-hand side. The column strips sides are mounted back-to-back with sides of adjacent column strips to form the column slats. Circuit devices for operation of the antenna are mounted on the U-shaped column strip and a connector is mounted at an apex of the U-shaped column slat.

    Abstract: A reflectarray antenna with a scanned radiated beam has an antenna feed for radiating a wave. A reflecting surface excited by the wave is reflected from a reflecting surface located on a tunable substrate in accordance with a variable surface impedance of the tunable substrate modulated to scan the radiated beam. The tunable substrate surface impedance is varied by modulating the dielectric constant or the permeability. The tunable substrate may be an electromagnetic band gap (EBG) material electromagnetic crystal (EXMT) structure to vary the surface impedance. The reflecting surface may be located on short-circuited waveguides with a variable surface impedance modulated to scan the radiated beam by adjusting phase shifts of the waveguides with tunable substrate phase shifter located in the waveguides or by adjusting the position of a piezoelectric movable short.

    Abstract: A weather radar antenna for radiating a desired beam formed by feeding quadrants of the antenna uses a dual-mode switched aperture antenna feed. The dual-mode switched antenna feed has an input divider that splits the input signal. A left switch switches the split input signal using a left first diode and a left second diode to top left and bottom right quadrants of the antenna. A right switch switches the split input signal using a right first diode and a right second diode to top right and bottom left quadrants of the antenna. The diodes are forward and reverse biased as required to feed top, bottom, left and right portions of the antenna to obtain the desired beam. When all the diodes are reversed biased the split signal is fed to all quadrants of the antenna.

    Abstract: A multi-band phased array antenna for radiating low frequency band signals and high frequency band signals. The multiband phased array antenna is formed from unit cells having waveguides for radiating high frequency band signals and end-fire radiating elements for radiating low frequency band signals. End-fire radiating elements are disposed on inner surfaces and outer surfaces of the four walls and radiate out the radiating end. Four waveguides are disposed together to radiate into the input end of the low frequency assembly.

The invention allows for the realization of a low-cost, ferroelectric material loaded feed manifold for phase shifting an antenna. This type of architecture can take many forms, with the preferred embodiment being waveguide. In an embodiment of the present invention, the Ferroelectric/Paralectric/Composite material loaded feed manifold described herein may solve the space/weight problem by integrating the material into the traditional waveguide feed manifold. A feed structure suitable for receiving and routing electromagnetic energy may include a subassembly including material suitable for shifting phase of electromagnetic radiation when an electrical field is applied. Material having a dielectric constant at least one of equal to and greater than the phase shifting material may also be included.
