Abstract: A surgical instrument includes a housing, a shaft extending distally from the housing, an end effector disposed at a distal end of the shaft, an actuator operably coupled to the housing, an actuation assembly, and a sensor module. The actuation assembly extends through the housing and the shaft and includes a distal end operably coupled to the end effector or a component associated therewith, a proximal end operably coupled to the actuator, and a spring. Actuation of the actuator manipulates the end effector or deploys the component relative thereto. The sensor module is disposed within the housing and configured to sense a property of the spring indicative of an amount the spring has been compressed. The sensor module is further configured, based upon the sensed property, to determine a condition of the end effector or the relative position of the component.

  • Publication number: 20210307812
Abstract: A method for treating tissue includes determining whether tissue is present between first and second jaw members. In a case where it is determined that tissue is present between the first and second jaw members, the method further includes determining whether activation has been initiated. In a case where it is determined that activation has been initiated, the method further includes supplying electrosurgical energy to the first and second jaw members to seal the tissue and, if it is determined that sealing is complete: stopping the supply of electrosurgical energy; activating a thermal cutting element to supply thermal energy to cut the sealed present tissue; determining if thermal cutting is complete; and, in a case where it is determined that the thermal cutting is complete, stopping and the supply of thermal energy.

  • Patent number: 11109930
Abstract: An enhanced haptic feedback system for medical diagnostics includes a laparoscope configured to be inserted into a body cavity to view tissue and obtain an image of the viewed tissue. An imaging device is configured to acquire physiological data about tissue, process the acquired physiological data, and output the processed data to a graphical user haptic interface (GUHI) capable of generating tangible sensations utilizing one or more haptic interfaces. The GUHI is configured to combine the image received from the laparoscope and the processed physiological data received from the imaging device to provide tangible sensations on both a front screen of the GUHI and a rear screen of the GUHI allowing a surgeon the sensation of feeling for abnormal tissue conditions between the surgeon's hands.
