  • Publication number: 20030230132
Abstract: Apparatus actuated by a rotational drive for crimping a fitting are disclosed. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a crimp ring having at least two crimp ring segments pivotably coupled together for crimping the fitting. A first member, such as a trunnion or coupling arm, engages a first of the at least two segments, and a second such member engages a second of the at least two segments. A screw is coupled to the rotating drive. The screw is coupled to the first and second members such that at least one of the members is movable along the screw when the screw is rotated. In one embodiment, the rotational drive couples to the screw by a transfer mechanism for transferring and controlling rotational movement from the rotational drive to the screw. The transfer mechanism can include a plurality of gears or can include a universal joint. The rotational drive can be a drill or can be a socket and a ratchet.

  • Publication number: 20030192357
Abstract: Apparatus for roll grooving thin wall pipe comprises a housing supporting a drive roll and an arm pivotally mounted on the housing and supporting a grooving roll. A feed screw between the housing and arm provides for pivoting the arm to displace the grooving roll radially toward and away from the drive roll, and a release arrangement between the feed screw and arm is operable to release the arm from the screw to protect the screw from damage. The feed screw is mounted on the housing and arm by a double pivot arrangement. Self-tracking during a roll grooving operation is provided by dimensionally different knurling on axially opposite sides of the rolling groove of the drive roll and/or by inclining the axis of the grooving roll relative to the axis of the drive roll and/or by tapering the rolling surface on the rolling projection of the grooving roll and/or by supporting the axially outer end of the drive roll against deflection.

  • Publication number: 20030046973
Abstract: A crimping assembly is disclosed. The assembly includes cam profiles on the ends of the arms. The cam profiles are engaged by the crimping tool and control the input force versus displacement of the tool. The cam profile includes a first portion defined by a radius, a second portion adjacent the first portion and defined by a non-linear equation, and a third portion adjacent the second portion and defined by a linear equation. The assembly further includes a passive mode of failure in the side plates. The arms of the assembly have a hardness greater than the side plates and have a maximum section height at their point of rotation for increasing their strength. The assembly further includes a leaf spring disposed between the arms and held therebetween by pins disposed in holes defined in the sides of the arms. A crimp ring having an increased diameter is disclosed for reducing the crimping force required to crimp 3-inch fittings.

  • Patent number: 6272895
Abstract: Roll grooving apparatus for rolling a circumferential groove in a pipe is adapted to be mounted on a power drive unit for the axes of the driven and idler grooving rolls to lie in a plane which is one of horizontal or at an acute angle to horizontal such that the weight of a pipe between the grooving rolls during a roll grooving operation promotes tracking of the groove. A rotatable groove depth gauge is mounted on a support member of the apparatus adjacent a stop element which engages the support member to determine groove depth, and the gauge is displaceable relative to the stop element into and out of a gauging position in which the stop element can be set to control the groove depth in a given workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4266179
Abstract: A solar radiant energy concentrating system for concentrating solar radiation on a radiant to electric power thermionic conversion transducer. The radiated energy concentration system utilizes multiple reflector units that collectively together or selectively less than all reflectors as an intensity control are settable to reflect solar radiation onto a multi-surfaced concentrator down onto a focal area encompassing the target area for reflection from the concentrator to the transducer input. The energy concentration is varied in the ratio range of from 20,000 to 1 up to 250,000 to 1. Reflector units are set to compensate for the constantly varying declination angle of the earth toward the sun, step tracks the sun compensating for daily rotation of the earth West to East on its axis up to a full 360.degree. depending on latitude North or South of the equator.
