Publication number: 20130293103Abstract: A 3-way halogen lamp selectively generates a first light level, second light level, and third light level based on whether a first terminal on the lamp base and a second terminal on the lamp base are connected to a power supply. A controller housed entirely within the based detects whether the first and second terminals are connected to the power supply, and generates a control signal as a function thereof. A switching circuit housed entirely within the base is operated by the control signal to provide a voltage load signal having a particular RMS voltage. A single filament halogen capsule is attached to the base and connected to the switching circuit for receiving the voltage load signal and generating the first light level, second light level, and third light level when the voltage signal has a first RMS voltage, a second RMS voltage, and a third RMS voltage, respectively.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 4, 2012Publication date: November 7, 2013Applicant: OSRAM SYLVANIA Inc.Inventors: Ernest C. Weyhrauch, James E. Oetken, George B. Kendrick

Publication number: 20130293130Abstract: A 3-way halogen lamp selectively generates different first, second, and third light levels. A first terminal on the lamp base receives a first input voltage waveform when the first terminal is connected to a power source. A second terminal on the lamp base receives a second input voltage waveform when the second terminal is connected to the power source. A rectifier circuit is connected to the first terminal for receiving the first input voltage waveform and rectifying the first input voltage waveform to generate a first load voltage waveform. A switching circuit is connected to the second terminal for receiving the second input voltage waveform and phase clipping the second input voltage waveform to generate a second load voltage waveform. A single filament is connected to the rectifier circuit and the switching circuit, and is housed in a halogen capsule attached to the lamp base.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 4, 2012Publication date: November 7, 2013Applicant: OSRAM SYLVANIA INC.Inventors: Ernest C. Publication number: 20090196049Abstract: A lamp (10) has a lamp reflector body (12). The lamp reflector body (12) can be formed of a borosilicate glass or a ceramic material; however, the ceramic material is preferred. The lamp body (12) has a forward end wall (16) with an adjacent circular rim (20) that includes one or more recesses (22) formed in an outer surface (23) thereof. A metal ring (26) preferably formed of aluminum, has a radial ledge (28) and a sidewall (30). A lens (24) is positioned on the forward end wall (26) of the lamp body (12) and is held in place by the radial ledge (28). One or more depressions (22a) are formed with the sidewall (30) and into the recesses (22), thereby retaining the lens (24) on the body (12). Preferably, the number of depressions (22a) is equal to the number of recesses (22). A preferred method of creating the depressions is by electro magnetic forming.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 1, 2008Publication date: August 6, 2009Inventors: Jeffrey P. Buschmann, James E. Oetken

Patent number: 6462478Abstract: A safety switch for a lamp having an outer envelope with a light source capsule mounted therein. The lamp has a base for connection to an electrical circuit via a mating socket and has in-leads appropriately connected to the base and to the light source capsule whereby electrical power can be supplied to the light source. A fuse is operatively mounted to one of the in-leads in the base. The safety switch is mounted in the outer envelope and tensioned thereagainst whereby breakage of the outer envelope causes the safety switch to release and electrically contact the in-leads causing a short circuit and opening the fuse, thereby removing power from the capsule.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 2001Date of Patent: October 8, 2002Assignee: Osram Sylvania Inc.Inventors: James E. Patent number: 4415833Abstract: A single-ended tungsten halogen lamp having a tubular hardglass evenelope containing an inert gas and a halogen, preferably bromine. An improved halogen regenerative cycle in this type of lamp is achieved by minimizing the bromine and impurity attack on the tungsten filament, thus increasing lamp life over a wider application temperature range, through the use of a tantalum or zirconium getter which is in the form of a coil. This coil is particularly useful in small volume lamps, and in a preferred embodiment, is attached to the filament mounting structure (bridge) on the side thereof opposite the main filament body.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1981Date of Patent: November 15, 1983Assignee: GTE Products CorporationInventors: James E. Patent number: 4337304Abstract: The invention provides a multi-step photo-process for disposing a definitive band of opaque conductive material on the sidewall portion of a CRT face panel. The process provides coating the panel with a photosensitive material and discretely exposing the viewing area and terminal region of the sidewall to polymerize the material thereon. The intermediate unexposed coating is removed, and at least the sidewall portion, coated with an opaque conductive material. The polymerized coatings are degraded and removed, leaving a precisely defined band of opaque conductive material on the panel sidewall, and making electrical contact with the aperture mask supporting studs embedded therein.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 1981Date of Patent: June 29, 1982Assignee: North American Philips Consumer Electronics Corp.Inventors: Kurt H.
