Patent number: 11209992Abstract: Detection of alteration of storage keys used to protect memory includes determining whether a storage key alteration event has occurred within a processor of a computing environment. The determining includes checking whether one or more selected fields of a storage key have been updated. The storage key is associated with a block of memory and controls access to the block of memory. Based on the checking indicating that the one or more selected fields of the storage key have been updated, a storage key alteration event has been detected. Based on determining the storage key alteration event has occurred, a notification is provided.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 2020Date of Patent: December 28, 2021Assignee: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Timothy Slegel, Jonathan D. Bradbury, Bruce C. Giamei, James H. Mulder, Peter J. Relson

Patent number: 11182316Abstract: Interrupt code conversion for efficient computer program recovery. In response to an error being detected while processing instructions of a computer program running on a computer system, the OS receives a first program interrupt code (PIC) and interrupts the computer program. Control of the computer program is passed to a program interrupt handler and the program interrupt handler inspects the first PIC issued as a result of detecting the error. The first PIC is converted to a second PIC wherein the second PIC is associated with another error predicted when subsequent running of the computer program occurs. The second PIC is presented to a recovery routine associated with the computer program and, in response to the detected error, running of the computer program is customized based on the second PIC rather than the first PIC.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 2019Date of Patent: November 23, 2021Assignee: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Steven Partlow, Elpida Tzortzatos, Peter Jeremy Relson, James H. Mulder, Christopher Lee Wood

Patent number: 10942683Abstract: Technical solutions are described for reducing page invalidation broadcasts in a computer system. An example method includes pre-allocating a pool of large memory frames by a real storage manager. The method also includes receiving, by a virtual storage manager, an instruction from an application to allocate a memory buffer, where the instruction includes a request to back the memory buffer using large pages. The virtual storage manager, in response to the instruction, allocates the memory buffer from the pre-allocated pool of large memory frames.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 2015Date of Patent: March 9, 2021Assignee: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: David Hom, James H. Mulder, Paula M. Spens, Elpida Tzortzatos

Patent number: 10657027Abstract: A method for obtaining data to debug an issue that affects a software application. In an embodiment, the method includes at least one computer processor receiving a request to obtain data associated with an issue that affects an executing software application. The method further includes determining a set of memory spaces utilized by the executing software application and one or more processes supporting the executing software application. The method further includes initiating a dump function to obtain data within the memory spaces of the determined set of memory spaces. The method further includes storing the data related to the dumped set of memory spaces by (i) high-speed capture and aggregation of data to volatile memory and (ii) spooling data within volatile memory to persistent memory for storage.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 2019Date of Patent: May 19, 2020Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: James H. Mulder, Purvi S. Patel, Patrice Salone, Ralph A. Sharpe, Girija Varanasi

Patent number: 10168960Abstract: Technical solutions for reducing page invalidation broadcasts in virtual storage management are described. One general aspect includes a method including allocating, by a storage manager, a virtual memory page to a memory buffer that is used by an application being executed by a multiprocessor system, the virtual memory page being allocated from an address space of the application. The method also includes recording, by a memory management unit, a mapping between the virtual memory page and a physical location in a memory. The method also includes in response to a request, from the application, to deallocate the memory buffer, delaying invalidation of the mapping between the virtual memory page and the physical location in a memory, based on a count of free frames in the address space of the application.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 2017Date of Patent: January 1, 2019Assignee: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Robert Miller, Jr., Harris M.
