  • Patent number: 5275245
Abstract: A device for facilitating creation of foxholes, and method for making the same, include a tool with a bucket auger having a hollow elongated body with openings along its length. Cutting blades are formed or attached at a distal end of the body and a connection means is formed or attached at proximal end of the body. A quick release connection for attachment of a handle used or extensions used for rotating the auger in the ground is provided. The method of making the auger includes the forming of the body out of a minimum number of pieces of material and forming the blades and the body with smooth and generally seamless connections. The method facilitates economical and mass production of the augers in a light weight but strong and durable form.

  • Patent number: 4848484
Abstract: A soil sample extraction tool including a container having a soil sample receiving chamber, the chamber being accessible by an opening in the container. A first end of the container is engageable with the soil and allows passage of the soil sample to the chamber. A closure member or door is adjustably movable with respect to the opening in the container. A control member is operatively connected to the closure member and allows movement of the closure member with respect to the opening in the container to facilitate opening of the closure member to gain access to the sample receiving chamber.

  • Patent number: 4790392
Abstract: An improved soil sample core extraction tool including a handle member having a soil probe member movable within its longitudinal socket, and having a clutch means for selectively providing for extension, retraction and prevention of movement of the soil probe member with respect to the handle member so that the soil probe member can be inserted into the soil, and retracted with a soil sample, the handle member including a selectively usable jack which assists in retracting the soil probe member from the soil by incrementally lifting the handle member while the soil probe member is engaged by the clutch means, the jack including an extension arm to provide leverage for the jack. The soil probe member is elongated in length and allows for a continuous soil sample to be received in a hollow receptacle within the interior of the soil probe member.

  • Patent number: 4106576
Abstract: A sampling tube cleaning device adapted for removable mounting on a soil sample core extraction tool, the tube cleaning device including a handle portion and a cleaning head connected to the handle portion, the cleaning head further comprising a first cleaning member arranged for being pulled along the length of the trough of a sampling tube, and a second cleaning member arranged for removing the end core from a sampling tube and in a preferred emobodiment the cleaning head also has a U-shaped part provided with absorbent material for applying a thin film of lubricant to the trough of the sampling tube as well as the outside of the sampling tube to provide both a lubricant and cleaning function to the sampling tube to facilitate ease of operation in subsequent uses.

  • Patent number: 4098360
Abstract: A soil sample core extraction tool having a handle member on which is movably mounted a soil probe member and a clutch arranged for selectively preventing movement of the soil probe with respect to the handle member. By sequential actuation and release of the clutch, the depth of the probe member into the soil being sampled becomes independent of the position of the handle member relative to an operator, thus permitting the operator to manipulate the handle member from a convenient position during the entire sampling operation. A cleaner is removably attached to the handle member for facilitating removal of a core sample from a sampling tube of the probe member and permitting subsequent lubrication of the sampling tube in order to eliminate resistance of the tube to insertion into a soil being sampled.
