  • Patent number: 8674555
Abstract: A hybrid neutral transfer switch in an electrical system to transfer a load between multiple AC power sources is provided. The hybrid neutral transfer switch includes a neutral gate controlled device connected to a neutral input of each of the multiple power sources and a mechanical transfer switch that switches between the neutral input of each of the power sources. During the transfer of power from one power source to another power source, the neutral gate controlled devices are activated and/or deactivated in conjunction with the switching of the mechanical transfer switch from one neutral input to another neutral input.

  • Patent number: 7589438
Abstract: A method and apparatus for transferring AC electrical power to a load from a first power source to a second power source provides for a time delay in the transfer to avoid problems associated with differences in the phases between the power sources. The phase of the voltage waveform from each power source is sensed continuously, and the phase difference is known at all times, so that it can be used when the transfer is necessary. The method and apparatus monitors the voltage from the first power source, and initiates the transfer from the first power source to the second power source in response to an unacceptable condition from the first power source. The second power source is connected only after waiting for a period of time corresponding to the appropriate time delay.

  • Patent number: 5814904
Abstract: Method and apparatus for providing alternate current paths to a junction through different sets of gate controlled SCRs coupled to the junction. The method starts with the step of initiating a switch from an active set of SCRs to an inactive set by removing a gate signal from two parallel connected, opposite sense current carrying SCRs which in combination carry AC current in either direction. Removal of the gating signal is often initiated, for example, in response to an indication that one alternating current source is faulty so that a switch to a second source is initiated. Current is then sensed through the two SCRs of the active set to determine a current carrying state for each of those two SCRs. After the state of the current carrying SCRs is determined the current carrying state of the SCRs is confirmed during a delay time period.

  • Patent number: 5555182
Abstract: A digital signal processor implemented monitoring circuit for detecting phase and magnitude disruptions in multi-phase alternating current input signals. A phase lock loop receives multi-phase alternating current input signals and provides one set of alternating current output signals in phase with a time average of the multi-phase alternating current input signals and provides a second set of alternating current output signals phase shifted in relation to the first set of output signals. In a three phase system the phase lock loop provides six alternating current signals. A demodulation circuit multiplies the first set of output signals from the phase lock loop circuit with the multi-phase input signals to produce demodulated sets of signals. An output circuit coupled to the demodulation circuit sums the first set of demodulated signals to provide a first source quality signal. The second set of demodulated signals is also summed to provide a second source quality signal.

  • Patent number: 4956610
Abstract: A system for measuring parameters in an environment having a metallic body positioned in an electrolytic medium includes a current density sensing device positioned adjacent the metallic body in a non-invasive manner. The device is sufficiently sensitive to measure current density in the milliamp per square centimeter range. A housing is provided for enclosing at least a portion of the current density sensing device in an electrically and thermally non-conductive manner. A computer is used for processing the data from the current density sensing device and wiring is provided for electrically interconnecting the two. The current density sensing device, which can be used separately from the apparatus, includes a toroidal transformer and a square wave magnetically coupled oscillator which drives the transformer. A pair of multi-section low pass filters are provided for monitoring the transformer. A fixed gain differential instrumentation amplifier is utilized for processing an output of the transformer.
